I wish they'd bring back those public information films, everyone laughed at them but things like the 3 second rule,

Exactly. Normal people just buy the car they like that meets their needs and budget, much like I buy a laptop or mobile phone or refrigerator. I could tell you pretty much nothing about the technical details of those items.
Thing is with those items, they don't have the same potential to kill you, they are not likely to be driving a phone or refrigerator on a wet motorway at 70mph. It is more a safety thing than just knowing how something works. Vaud said:

on holiday at the moment, other half looks at the ceiling fan spinning away, and asks "do they need power to do that"
Just tell her that it's powered by a giant elastic band, and one of housekeeping's job is to wind it back up in the day time.AstonZagato said:

I'm sure there was a seat belt one with the catch phrase "Clink Clunk" fronted by none other than serial corpse bummer Jimmy Saville.

Why does knowing whether your car is front or rear wheel drive a safety issue when driving at 70mph on the motorway?
In my experience if you hit standing water they handle differently.Timmy40 said:

No, I don't think I've missed the point. I'm almost certain nobody out there thinks a car could be steered by the rear wheels. Not even someone who can't identify which end is driven.Again, it's this little car anorak bubble some seem to live in which is clouding your interpretation.

frontwheel drive, you'll understeer then grip then probably spin out.
5th gear did a thing on when you put your new tyres on the car, depending on where you put them and hit standing water can result in different behaviour. I can't find the link though...
