OP, why all the way to South Manchester?
Some nice areas south of Warrington, Stockton Heath, Appleton, Lymm, etc..
Also some nice villages east of Warrington which are close to the M62 or east lancs road.
to be honest with you I've looked at everywhere from the England/ wales border to north of warrington and included parts of the Wirral in my search so far!

Stockton heath, grappenhall , stretton etc. are all at the top of my search tree so obviously as you creep further down the m56 the search also ends up including hale barns, dunham massey area , Bowden and Altrincham. Lymm is a lovely village too and I've had a little look in the surrounding area there too.

I like it round delamere forest as well, you've got loads of little villages like tarporley and so on............I just can't find the right house yet!!

Time wise, I suppose it takes about 75-80 minutes door to door, including walking and the train.

However, it allows me to cycle when I wish, live in a town I want and only costs me £130 a month. I will happily put up with a little extra time for the additional benefits.

80 minutes......that's a bit ripe for me!! but then my working day is 11-12 hours a day without the commute!

I do 170 miles each way. I rent a place at my work and go home at the weekends, so I only do there and back once a week.

Still a killer commute though!

now that is something I couldn't do!! i'm lucky in the fact that we are based entirely in the north west so there really isn't any need to move any further out.170 miles is like me working here and living in Bristol!! nutter!

That would be ok to me if you're on your own but if you've got a wife, g/f, house, family, hobbies, etc that you are only seeing a couple of days a week you're basically giving your company 24hrs of your time plus paying your company for the accommodation on the days you are away to your company how does that compare if you converted it to an hourly rate?

Not hating, just curious as to why people do it?

Is it leading to greater things? Are you planning on moving closer to work?

It depends what you're happy with, the type of commute (30 minutes stuck in traffic vs 1 hour free run) and how much time you spend at work. If you have a good work life balance spending a bit more time in the car isn't a huge problem. If you work 10 hour days then adding another hour or so commute doesn't work for me.

My current commute is 3 miles, no traffic and takes < 10 minutes. I'm moving at the end of the year but it will only add another 3 or 4 minutes to my journey.

I'm only giving my own company 24hrs of my time. I'm a contractor. my OH is understanding, I've been doing this for while now and it's made us if anything stronger! The hourly rate more than makes up for it. Where I live at home work is hard to come by. Not planning on moving closer to work either as the house prices are just silly in Aberdeen, but I'll be looking to contract closer to home in the near future, just got to be prepared for a hourly rate cut. But for now, it's fine.

If it makes you feel any better in your own jobs, I wake up at 3am to commute on a Monday, a 2hr and 45 min drive then a 12 hour shift!

I did it for while as I was trying to build up my business - three days work and then four days weekend wasnt too shoddy. I later did a stint of two months and stayed in my motorhome - the missus came up to Edinburgh every ten days or so for a few days. I pocketed £11000 - that more than covered our costs of travelling for 18 months wink

Clapham to Camberley every day for me, 30 miles and anything from 1hour each way to 2 hours each way depending on traffic, time I can get out the office etc.

I was supposed to be moving this year but it looks like it's all falling through, so I'm stuck with the commute for the foreseeable future.

Whitchurch (south Bristol) to Avonmouth every day. About 11 miles. However I have to deal with the outskirts of City Centre Traffic. However, I do have an alternative way, which although longer, is quieter.

On a good day, takes me 30 minutes to get in, leaving at 7, and about 40 minutes getting home, leaving at 5.
My commute used to be 6 miles, through a wonderful country lane which was almost always empty and used to take 20 minutes in the car. Great commute, crap work environment.

I was head hunted to a job 230 miles from home. Drove in Monday morning, home Friday night, living in a comfortable large motor home at the office all week. A pretty awful 6 months while selling up back home.

Bought a nice property, with a 32 mile, 45/50 minute commute when I started. It had stretched to 65/70 minutes as traffic increased.

Very boring in the morning, but could do business on a good car phone in the afternoon, so not as bad.

Still I was just so glad to retire, & stop that drive after 10 years.

I travel about 66 miles each day from Shoreham to Eastbourne. It's along the A27 which can be utter donkey balls (especially the single carriageway bit) but I had been unemployed for 9 months and this was the first job offer I had. I have a company car to drive (a hateful current shape Astra 1.7cdti) which sweetens the deal as I don't have to think about tax, insurance, repairs and maintenance just the fuel which I can claim but only for mileage above & beyond my commuting (I'm a property manager so any sites I go to visit etc).

It takes me about an hour each way on a good day and it's about the limit of what I'll accept for commuting really. I wouldn't even mind taking the train (works out the same sort of time but costs a teeny bit more) but I really do need a car at my disposal whenever I'm at work

I work 20 miles from home so not terrible, 15 miles of nice B roads and 5 miles on the road bike as traffic in city is too slow.

I bought my house for half the cost of the equivalent property closer to work and will have the mortgage paid off sooner, so the commute for me is worth it.

We have been considering moving further afield, in to the fens as the houses up there are much, much cheaper. That does mean a 35-40 mile commute, which I can live with.

I have a baby now and love the 20 minute drive or 35 minute cycle as it means I get to see loads of her growing up, even though my pay isn't amazing, sometimes you cant put a price on a nice quality of life!
Totally agree with this, although my salary is actually pretty decent.

I could go and earn more elsewhere, but I have two children under 2 years old and I am home evey night for bath and bedtime without fail.

To me that is worth more than money.

update........after all my searching the right house was under my nose.......4 miles from work and what a joy!!! i'm in work in the morning in a few minutes and going home only takes 10 - 15 minutes.
the commute at the old place was getting worse and in the end going home was taking 1 hour 15 minutes a night....thanks for everyone's input!

That's great news. I'm 3 miles from work but I'm moving next month and I'll also have a 4 mile commute. I think I can just about manage the work life balance with the extra mile biggrin
