"Council" have wheelie bins with no lids. (How the hell do they get broken off? Trying to slam them shut when they're filled with bottles/cans/pizza boxes/fag packets/unwanted kids/unwanted pets/pieces of trampoline/pieces of static caravans............?)

(PS tabloid report today that a kid has been taken into care because the parents smoked in his/her prescence. The room was wreathed in smoke, and the kid's clothes reeked of it. Smoking inside is archtypical council.)
My dad has smoked inside since he started and he's not council.

I smoke inside if it's my home or the home of a good friend and it's agreed. Most of my friends smoke though
Well it's your home and you're entitled to do what you want. Since the smoking ban in shops it's really noticeable now when someone comes into my shop who's been smoking at home - the smell from their clothes is shocking. I suppose it's because the odour of cigarettes is now hardly ever encountered in a public place, so you notice it more.

I live now in Ulster, and there are still a lot of smokers in my town. I left my home city of Norwich in 1990 and at that time nobody I knew still smoked. None of my family, none of my friends. Coming here was like going back in time.

Didn't mean to offend anybody.

Smoking generally is a bit council, or hipster, or 'old person'.

None of these is to be commended.

Oh, I'm not offended!
But in your own home, alone or with other people who are smoking I can't see the problem

Is my friend who is an Oxford professor who went to a public school a bit council because he smokes?

No, but Oxford professor (inextricably) = 'old person', so my point stands.

I went to a house the other day, and the door was answered by a 5 year-old kid, and the smell was overpowering of what Stewie Griffin would call "marryjewana". Now smoking that in the house in the prescence of small children is seriously uncool - but is it council?

He's under 40 but I'm not sure of his exact age!

Anyway, I just don't think that smoking is council. Some council people smoke but I also know plenty of very un-council people who smoke.

I don't know about that, I don't smoke around children. Not because it's council or not but because it's the wrong thing to do. When I smoke in my home it tends to be either me alone or with a couple of other people who also smoke.

It's pretty rare that I do that though. 95% of the time at least I step into the garden. I don't often smoke at home anyway. It's just a habit, I suppose.

Just to clarify - I only smoke tobacco. Cigarettes or cigars.

I was on the boat Sunday and we passed a family out for a walk, mother, father (?) and three young children. The smell of weed from the dad's spliff was very very strong even though we were 20-25 metres away. Scrutters.

Just been out to the local shops.
On the way I passed a tanning/beauty salon. Standing outside were 6 or 7 blond'n'orange scouse wags, all dressed in t-shirts proclaiming them to be members of a hen party. They were having a massive, loud screechy and very public row for all the street to hear.

Keep it classy, Liverpool....

looking at a professor and thinking that people probably think you're one too, because you're smoking, is a massive delusion.

Yes, of course. That's exactly what I said I was thinking.

Smoking is neither council or not.

On the whole, smoking is council. And so are you for defending it and dressing like an Estate Agent.

OK, I'll be council

I'm not really defending it, I just think that it's something people across the social spectrum do (although you're probably right that the demographic of council smokers may well be greater than in other social classes)
