I'm not fussed they're not buying as I've already mentioned, if they genuinely bid on something else in that time I understand where they're coming from.

What I don't understand is they had enough time to realise they were outbid, find a replacement and bid on that; but didn't bother letting me know this was the case until auction end. As I said if they had messaged me saying this I would of simply removed their bid(s) too.

Cases have been opened with eBay and car relisted. I doubt anything will come from the open case apart from me having my fees refunded.

OP, the first reply is the only thing you can and should do:

I used to do a lot of ebaying and I've sold quite a few cars on there. Being messed about is par for the course these days - there are a lot of bellends out there.

At least you won't be out of pocket.

It's exactly how shill bidding works, and exactly why I wouldn't be buying off you. You do realise that the bid you cancelled will have sent your genuine buyers bid to their maximum, so you now know what their ceiling price was and are trying to force them to pay that price. They'd have probably got it cheaper if it wasn't for your cancelled bid. Good news for you, bad news for them.
This isn't correct. After I cancelled the 0 feedback bidder the price dropped to where it was before they bidded, not the genuine buyers maximum bid, in fact it never reached that point again and the item didn't sell for their maximum bid.

For anyone suggesting I was shill bidding, this isn't the case. I wanted my car to sell as I need it gone as soon as possible, shill bidding could jeopardise this. If I wanted something to sell for a set price I would either set a reserve or list a buy-it-now listing.

I'll update once I hear back from eBay.

Thanks. smile

This is what I have done, hopefully the car sells this time.

Why should they have to do anything at all? They got an email saying they had been outbid. End of story, they have no further obligation to your or to eBay from that point forward.

Hmm....

Believe it or not, according to the eBay fine print, the OP is actually correct!!!! yikes

Morally wrong, possibly... legally enforceable, who knows, but according to the strict rules of eBay, actually correct!!!

The fine print

If you’re outbid on an item, wait until the auction has ended before placing a bid on an equivalent item. If the bidder who won the auction doesn’t complete the transaction for any reason, you could become the winning bidder.
If ever there was a reason not to bid on an item until the final few seconds then this, surely, is it?

I don't begrudge the winning bidder not buying my car, I'm just annoyed that they're offering no help towards the situation.
You're a cretin

YOU fked up, and YOU want to blame someone else! rolleyes

YOU are the reason eBay is going to st. People like YOU. Not some poor buyer who you want to ruin because of your fk up.

If you tried that st with me I'd come round a day before you expect me to pick the car up and pour paint stripper over it. Then turn up next day. Tick the box marked "not as described" and call you a for good measure. You really think you can blackmail someone into helping you when it's your mistake!

CAre to tell us your eBay handle so we can all avoid you and your shill bidding shenanigans!

Simple thing is they have no reason not to know you were shill bidding, and so if I was in a situation like that I would assume it was a shill bid and deliberately avoid dealing with the seller because of that.

OP,I can't believe you've reported someone when you caused all the problems in the first place.

A lot of you don't seem to understand the basic ebay principle that all of your bids are binding until the end of the auction, unless they have been cancelled by the SELLER, until you can get that simple idea into your heads you should probably avoid using the site.

It doesn't matter if you have been outbid, it's still binding until someone else has won the auction.

I think you'll find it's people like you who are the bellend. Go away for a minute, then come back and read your post again.

Wow.

OP, it is what it is. It's the internet, this kind of stuff happens. Get your fees back and relist. If the second place buyer turns out to have placed the winning bid with a spoof account after changing their mind, they will be found out. If not, it could have been a genuine new account, people do sometimes sign up to bid on specific items, and I have dealt with zero feedback buyers in the past without issue (albeit never on a car).

Right for anyone interested in the outcome:

Car was relisted and has sold to a genuine bidder, they're collecting this week. smile

My fees were refunded to me, which I thought would be the end of it, but no...

I received a message from eBay over the weekend explaining they had received my report on the non-paying bidder who have subsequently had their accounts suspended. They didn't detail any reason why but the fact they mentioned 'accounts' I'm guessing the 0 feedback bid I cancelled had come from them?

All round happy ending for me, thanks for all the helpful replies.

Good result, sounds like it was a shill bid as suspected. Dumb buyer!

But why would the buyer put in a shill bid? I don't think that's what some posters had suggested.

It's what was suggested on the first page. OP spoke to them and determined they had clearly changed their mind, since the alternate auction they bid on hadn't even ended yet they didn't want to go through with the sale. Alarm bells. Why would they not want to go with the car they bid on first?

Ebay noobs bid on the car, kept looking around and saw a preferable car, so created another account to outbid themselves and bid on the new one. Probably didn't realise they could retract bids, or have bids retracted, or be found out by using the same IP address.
