Long Story short:

Ordered some car parts from www.japanparts.com totalling around £1000. About a week or two later they get delivered to my door by DHL. Nothing extra to pay at all so all good.

The next day I get a phone call from DHL asking for my VAT number. This was personal for my car so I told them I didn't have one. I specifically asked them on the call, "is there anything extra to pay"? to which they replied no.

My question is, am I safe from any extra charges? OR can I expect some invoice through my door anytime soon?

Also, all the writing on the parcel was in Japanese so I'm guessing they had no clue what it was or how much its worth.

Thanks

I would have expected some customs charges too, has that been taken care of?

No I didn't have to pay anything extra.

What I don't get is when they phoned me I specifically asked after telling them it was a personal delivery if I would have to pay any extra and the guy said no.

I was expecting custom charges at a minimum...

How can they charge me for VAT when they have no idea what the items were worth? It was all written in Japanese...

I've ordered a few pairs of jeans from Japan, not cheap been handmade and the denim woven on old looms then dipped in natural indigo. 3 pairs came through with no duty what so ever but the vendors had kindly marked the price down on the export label. Another pair which was marked correctly ended up costing me an extra £78 in duty.

Literally every bit of writing was in Hand written japanese so I have no idea if it was marked correctly or not haha. How soon after delivery did you receive the invoice?

I had to go and pay at the DHL depot in South London which is only a 20min drive away or pay over the phone and then they would deliver.

If you have the items in hand and no duty notice on the package just the japanese stuff then you should be fine, touch wood. Mine was clearly labelled Duty to be paid and amount and VAT plus DHL handling fee.

Didn't get anything like that. Was just delivered with no extra fees or anything. As mentioned above phone call next day asking for a VAT number and he said no when I asked if any extra charges. But then why ask for VAT no.?

Yeah I received a letter first saying they have a package for me but duty is to be paid. Sounds like you got lucky.

Trolling or trying to be funny ? It's the phone number for a lot of consulates in Syria.

I ship loads with DHL for work

Instead of customs holding it pending charges DHL pay them for us in advance and then seek to recover monies owed via invoice at the end of the month/billing period, is it possible they have done this for you?

Expect a nice invoice in a few weeks time.

HMRC needs that import duty and tax. There is a deficit to sort out.

I have a recorded phone call in which I specifically asked is there any more money owed and the guy from DHL said no.

So if I did receive an invoice what are the chances I can use this against them though?

Doubt it. You owe money to HMRC. Someone else saying you don't probably doesn't wash with those lovable tax types. smile

If you hear nothing in 3 months - you will likely be fine.

I sent £180 worth of goods to a guy Mexico , he didn't want them so sent them back via DHL, like you nothing to pay when they were delivered

A few days later a bill for VAT , duty charges and DHL admin charges.

It took me 6 months to get it quashed as they were my goods being returned , despite me sending them proof I'd sent them out they wouldn't let it go, it even got so far as them threatening me with debt recovery agents

You'll definitely get a bill for VAT, duty and admin , my guess is £300

I would be very surprised if you get away without paying import duties/ VAT on a package of that value. DHL invoice after delivery, so the fact that you have the goods does not mean you avoided it.

Asking if there were any 'extra changes', could be interpreted as extra changes over and above standard import duty, which they may have assumed you were expecting...In short, the phone call will prove nothing.

Hopefully you get lucky, but be prepared for the worst. I expect you would be looking at £300+ if you do get a bill.

Edit: Just to add, the value would have had to be declared when DHL loaded the package, it may not have been obviously written on the box but it would be marked down somewhere.
