Shirley this is a case for the goldfish solution.

You keep replacing the dead goldfish until your child is old enough to cope with its loss.

I do hope I haven't ruined anybodies childhood

I wasn't allowed a goldfish. My das said they took too much work to look after.

1. Build time machine
2. Travel back to the point at which the house was being built
3. Bribe builder to put a hinge on the problem floorboard
4. Travel to the present, lift floorboard, retrieve card
5. Put card somewhere safe, travel back to the point where the builder is just turning up for work and bribe him to ignore the unusually dressed stranger who will try to bribe him to hinge a floorboard.

Wouldnt action 5 cause a massive time and space paradox with action 2, thus tearing a hole in the fabric of the cosmos?
