Threatened by a scally.
Discussion
I was walking home last night from the train station after a long day at work and decided to pop into Sainsbury's to buy some bread/milk etc. This is one of those Sainsbury's in the centre of town.
I got to the till and was stood behind this little scally, probably about 19, shaved head, black tracksuit, buying beer....you know the sort. He's also giving the young lad behind the counter a load of abuse. Anyway, he goes to leave the shop and I'm getting my stuff scanned through. Next thing I hear is this young thug shouting, "Eh mate...Eh mate...yeah you!"
I looked around and he's staring at me. "Me?"
"Yeah you, give us 60p so I can buy this fking paper"
"Err...no. I'm not giving you anything." I carried on putting my stuff in bags, paid and walked past him.
"Eh you....what the fk's your problem. Give me fking 60p or i'll knock you out outside".
Me - "seriously....??" and I laughed at him.
He then proceeded to follow me out of the shop and down the street all the while telling me he's going to "kick fk out of me"
Now, I don't really like violent situations. There's no good that can come of them and if I'd have lamped him I would no doubt have been caught on CCTV and locked up for the night. I also don't want to lose my job by getting involved in a fight in the street with some scally who clearly has nothing to lose. So I walked away and he lost interest. I was happy with the outcome albeit not happy that I'd been threatened by this little yob.
What annoys me is that scally's like that see threatening people as a way of life and get away with it because they know decent folk won't do anything about it. It really boils my piss!
Cool story bro and all that, I know.

There's nothing to be gained from engaging in a physical confrontation and no reason to give them any money so yours was the correct course of action. As tempting as it might be to batter them into a coma, you'll either end up in hospital or a police cell depending on how it goes, neither is a good place to be.
I wouldn't bother personally but maybe one should report such behavior to the police? I'm sure threatening to 'kick the fk out of you' constitutes some form of offence and someone like that is probably known to the police.

Faired far better than I did. Years ago was out in Amersham with friends for another friend's birthday. Walking back to the station, got shouted at, then chased by a group of guys that match your gentleman's description. Managed to get to the train station, jump on a train and shout out the doors for the train driver to shut the doors but to no avail. Promptly got cornered and bottled. 999 called, ambulance turned up, police never did.
The reason for all of this? They THOUGHT we were from a certain town, when in fact my group and I all lived about half an hour away!
I suppose they will always be around as there's nothing/no one to stop them!

Having lived in London my whole life I see scumbags like this often. Be rest assured that one day, they will try this on someone less forgiving and they will get knocked the fook out, and then maybe they will learn the hard way that this behaviour is not acceptable.
Just don't let it be you who succumbs to it

Not that I'm a well built company director etc, etc but where does the law stand if you hit him first? He's following you telling you he's going to knock you out? Is there no defence to saying you genuinely felt your life was in danger? Not that I'm advocating it, it just seems very strangeMe - "seriously....??" and I laughed at him.

You did the right thing. There's really too much to lose by getting into a fight with an idiot like that.
However, you should really call the police and report it. There will be CCTV from Sainsburys and the police will probably know the guy you're talking about when they see him. Attempted mugging / threatening behaviour - there has to be an offence for this... Don't let him get away with that behaviour without consequence.

I don't know - that's the thing. The problem lies in the fact that I wouldn't want to find out what would happen if I had just smacked him. There's a chance he could press charges and it could go through the courts. Even if you were found not guilty, would you want to risk that or would you bottle it and take a plea deal and end up with a record? It's a tough one.Looking back at it, I know I handled it the right way but I have to admit I felt a bit ashamed by walking away and trying to ignore him.

I'm not saying you should do anything else, I'm just wondering where the line is? Does he have to be 1 meter away? 1 foot? 1 inch? Or you only allowed to retaliate once you have a black eye? Looking back at it, I know I handled it the right way but I have to admit I felt a bit ashamed by walking away and trying to ignore him.
60p? Sounds like a Telegraph reader.
Not worth wasting your energy on O.P. The urchin sounds like a right tt, and it's pretty much guaranteed he will get properly filled in one day when he crosses the wrong person (and when there's no CCTV around). Hopefully, the damage will be serious.
