In many tv programmes and films, the stars are listed as co or executive producers. What does a producer do? And why so.many of them? And why do the stars want that job?

Not hugely. Brick lifts are used now, or on bigger sites telehandlers.

(OK, that's lifting tiles, but you get the idea)

Stars want the job as it improves the pay - more involvment means more $$$

I thought an Executive Producer was basically someone from outside the production company who brought finance to the film, an investor not necessarily involved creatively or in decision making

It's a creative tool designed to draw the viewer into and through the story with more fluidity.

Yep. Correct.

Also, many big stars (and increasingly, lesser ones) forego their normal fee and instead take a slice of the revenue the film or programme generates and are thus often listed as Executive Producer.

What's the profession term for the people that design production line machines and stuff?

An engineer of sorts I assume but I wonder if there's a specific title.
Still a design engineer. Just on a different part of the chain. Could be called a manufacturing engineer but they generally own the process of them in action, not their design.

No. No fuel to do so.

Well, it probably could - but someone would have to spend a fortune building a retrieval craft.

I was watching Plebs last night (a comedy set in ancient Rome). Its not a massive hit with not a massive audience I don't think, but they have built loads of sets, both inside and outside sets. Would they have been built just for Plebs or would be shared with either another country's version, or maybe shared with a period drama or film that was being made at the same time?

On the subject of TV shows (to use the American terminology) I note that there are often different directors which suggests that they make them one episode at a time. But that seems a very inefficient way to do it, especially when there are crowd and/or outside scenes. So is it really one episode at a time, or do they take the opportunity to shoot more material when they can?
