It is serious.

Wings create lift because there is higher air pressure beneath them than above but what you've been told about lift occurring because the top surface of the wing is longer than the bottom is not the full story.

I remember Dr Babinsky - he taught me fluid dynamics about 15 years ago.

Taking a "standard" aerofoil (curvy on top, flat on the bottom) at 0 deg angle of attack, why does the top surface being "longer" make the pressure lower? As the air doesn't "have to travel faster"?
Does the air really travel further over the top (because fluids stick to surfaces) or is the scallop actually left empty by the passing of the aerofoil, thus leaving a hole in the air above the wing?
I feel I'm wording this badly but.. yea.

Why does everyone explain it in terms of the movement of air when it's actually the foil moving into static (relatively) air?

Aynsco.

At least that's what they've said when I've rang them...

I'd like to think that 'anus' is in there somewhere though

It never ceases to amuse for any age, much to my wifes delight I have succeeded in indoctrinating the kids with the idea that a well delivered trump is a matter for hilarity and finger pointing rather than shame.

No-one knows - so far everyone has died first.

Nipples; do they become bigger/erect or does the skin around them shrink back to make them appear so?

This is an excellent question, and it's one I intend to address in my planned coffee table book on the entire subject. I also want to introduce a classification system for the various states of engorgement.

There will be an accompanying DVD, my SLR shoots video as well as stills.

Sounds like rather a fantastic piece Sir, i'll put my name down for one in advance. Surely a lifetime achievement award will follow for you.

That's nice of you to say so, though I think just doing the work will be reward enough in itself.

Now I just need to find some suitable volunteers.

I'm sure you'll have no problem, leave some details in the cubicle of the local Gents loos and they'll be queuing up at your door. Will you bring out a version with ladies in it too?

Because most people that study it do so in a wind tunnel where that is the case.

They contain erectile tissue, similar to that found in willies.

Following on from the aerodynamics talk above, i was watching some YouTube vids last night on Thrust 2. At one point Richard Noble stated that he was within 5mph of Thrust 2 taking off. Which got me to thinking, where does Thrust 2 get its downforce from?

The shape of the nose would create downforce, but if that was all it would seem imbalanced to me and cause the front wheels to dig in and slow it down. But behind the nose i can see no further control surfaces / aerodynamic aids to control lift. So was it all underbody? One fact i did pick up from YouTube was that the air passing over the top of the engine intake was supersonic creating 'mist' for want of a better term, blocking Richard's view!

I've had a Google but found no clear answers. I did however find this excellent article on the design of Thrust 2 by the designer himself, John Ackroyd : http://woottonbridgeiow.org.uk/ackroyd/thrust2.php... Here is a quote on the steering system, evidently based on that of a bus!

"Rack and pinion steering has long been accepted in road and race cars but until "Thrust 2" had never been used in a Land Speed Record car. The advantages of directness, accuracy, compactness and geometric sympathy with independant suspension made it the natural choice. A beautiful quality heavy duty unit produced by Adwest for Leyland Engineering Limited buses, seemed to fit the bill. Adwest agreed to modify the length and stroke to suit "Thrust" geometry and remove the power boosting to increase the 'feel'."

I would thoroughly recommend anyone give it a read, but i couldn't find an answer to how they balanced the downforce. Any ideas?

I'm not 100% sure but I seem to recall there being a TV programme that said the engine was slightly raked forward (so the exhaust was slightly higher than the intake) so had the effect of thrusting it towards the ground.

I'm afraid that isn't the case, willies and the clematis have erectile tissue, nipples do not. They do appear to be bigger due to the contraction of the smooth muscle tissue (areola).

Is that why some women call it their flower?
