Travelling in a vehicle, let's say plane.

If I jump in the air, why am I not thrown back at the rate the plane is travelling at?

Similarly, a fly, in my car, car doing 50mph, is the fly flying at 50mph also?
Relativity my boy.

You're doing 50mph relative to the ground and so is the fly, obviously.

The same way in a plane.

Let's say I start a bank - just a normal high street retail bank. Rates are prices are all competitive and inline with the market but I need customers.

So, I run a promotion. Switch you Mortgage and current account to my bank and you can have a year off paying your mortgage. Obviously there would be tie-ins and conditions and my bank would have to raise considerable funds to cover the deal for a year but in essence....is it doable?
This is essentially what happened and caused the credit crunch.
People were offered neg-am mortgages - essentially pay a HUGE discount now but then cover it with larger payments later on so over the life of the mortgage the bank still makes a decent return.
This was fine until people got comfortable paying almost no mortgage and started living well beyond their means.
So they just handed back the keys when the bigger payments started.
Or, more likely, they attempted to remortgage onto ANOTHER teaser rate but used the equity built in their house to cover the difference and early redemption fees.
So THAT worked for a while until house prices stagnated and lending criteria became stricter.

That's all in the past.
The problem TODAY is that people now realise that getting a mortgage is quite hard and that (outside London) you can't bank on price rises to bail you out.
So they assess whether they can really afford the mortgage over the whole life of the tie-in.
And if you do that your bank will no longer look competitive since you need the returns to work out over that period.
Hence the only market share you would gain, most likely IMHO, would be sketchy borrowers who want to live beyond their means...
Which is building a timebomb on your balance sheet!

not for me but the OH is currently putting a jacket together from a pattern, its quite difficult and there is a word "Vord" on the pattern which feels like an intstruction as it is bookended by a full stop.

one word in the sentence, i.e. attach the left lapel to the interfacing. vord.

any ideas? thanks.

when you have a skip delivered, travellers arrive from seemingly nowhere very soon afterwards.

How do they know? Do the skip hire companies tip them off or do they have military drones/ satellite surveillance?

Having to commute on the M3 though the current road works, I see that all heavy plant machinery have a green flashing light next to the amber one on the roof etc. Any reason?

OK, here is one thats always bothered me.

In Red Dwarf, Rimmer was repairing a drive plate, which in turn killed all the crew. So my question is this... Why is Rimmer, a 2nd Technician repairing a drive plate, instead of fixing vending machines?

On formula 1, do all of the races happen the same way round? I mean anti clockwise, I think.

can you have 2 colds at once ?

is it possible to keep catching colds so it turns into weeks/months of a cold or does one have to clear before you can get another

Entirely possible. In the same way that it's completely possible to have pneumonia and tuberculosis at the same time. Illnesses aren't mutually exclusive.

Most F1 tracks run clockwise.

On the current calendar Sao Paolo, Austin, Singapore and Abu Dhabi are anti-clockwise. Suzuka is a figure-of-eight so is both.
