Where does the name 'squash' come from, as in Orange Squash?

F1 just dseems to be a procession, havent watched it for ages, much prefer BTCC etc.
Doesnt help that there may be some great tussles for ,say,8th/9th place, but they are never shown, just the leader going round.....and round.....and round.....and round

I would say (complete guess!) that it comes from the Oranges being squashed to make the juice.
Even thought it's concentrate.

Ref F1 - I used to enjoy it, with my Dad. Even went ago Silverstone one year.
Can't recall when I stopped enjoying it or why.

F1 - love it or loathe it - is a victim of it's own (or Bernie's) success, IMHO.

Once it established a dominance it became political (with pleas to FIA etc etc) and therefore less outright sports oriented, but at the same time more of a spectacle - with the attendant requirement for each venue to outdo the other, even if there was no 'racing'.

I'd happily watch any contest - drag strip, ovals, rally stage - if there is competition. Same for non-engined sports, if there's a contest it stirs my interest. Less so if it's a raging score-fest (basketball and ice hockey come to mind) or too slow (England RFU circa 1982).

Back to my query - on F1 cars what does the 'N' painted beside the cockpit indicate - blood group? Earthing? Or is it a 'Zed'?

Think it is a button so that the marshalls can select Neutral when they have to move the car.

Neutral. There's switch near the N that disengages the gears so the car can be pushed in the event of a breakdown or accident. Makes it easy for the Marshals to find it.

On the topic of F1; how can I be SUCH a petrol head (literally anything with an engine, and I'm absorbed) yet find F1 so painfully boring to watch.
I don't know what it is that makes it so unappealing, can't put my finger on it at all.
Same weekend as Rossi dropped Marquez off his bike, my mate (huge F1 fan) told me the F1 race was the best in years.
Managed 8 laps before I deleted the recording...
I agree, my son loves it but I struggle to watch. I think its the way that a race is pretty much decided early on. as long as the front runner doesn't mess up then its a given.

I watched a NASCAR oval race a few years ago that was on a yellow with about 3 laps to go. The race restarted and the cars went about 3 or 4 across fighting for position. The 5 placed (from the yellow) won the race after a huge smash on the final lap. One car passed the finishing line on its roof and on fire. Now that's my kind of racing smile

Interesting.

In at least a few recent breakdowns the cars appeared to be locked up - no movement at all no matter what they pressed. Presumably it's all electronicated now and not a simpler mechanical disconnect?

Back to bigger questions; on share use paths (pedestrians and cyclists) there is no posted speed limit. Does any limit apply?

Yep - just a switch that enables the clutch to disengage. Doesn't always work as it should though. Also, I think it was one of the Torro Rossos or Force India that completely munched its engine and gear box and the system wouldn't work if the box is seized solid.

Anyone here got any recent experience of how quickly a replacement driving license takes? Just did mine online doing the passport method. I know it says less than 2 weeks but I wana be sure. Will need it before the 14th dec.
Just changed addresses in mine and it was back in about 10 days. Not sure if its the same for replacing lost ones but I guess it would be?
I'm actually quite amazed, my license came in today!

Is there a new directive for Doctors to shake your hands and introduce themselves by thier Christain name?

I've had cause to see 3 in the last week or so and they all did it and it didn't seem natural to them.

Why, on the list of ingredients for some things, do they list 'aqua' instead of 'water'? Or is aqua not actually water?!

Not sure where else to ask but I've always found this thread useful.

I'm trying to order shorts online (going abroad) and I'm not sure what size to get.

My waist is 44", hips 42". despite this I wear jeans that are 36" fine. I have 36" waist shorts that I bought a couple of years ago (they were from primark) and are rather tight on me which is why I'm looking to get new ones.
My feeling is perhaps get 38" ones but I'm not sure if I should be ordering something closer to my waist measurement?

hadn't even thought about them until you mentioned. upon looking they don't seem to have much choice. I was looking at NEXT, they don't have them in store (I checked today), but I can order them online and get it delivered next day to the store for free, then give it back to them if it doesn't fit.

Yes it's a struggle to find shorts for sale in store at this time of year. Getting shorts delivered to the store is a good option.
