In most films, watches are not worn and nor are clocks unless the plot line calls for them as they cause a continuity headache. A two or three minute scene may take anything up to a week to film and the final edit may require the cut to be in a different order than when it was filmed.

What happens when a Doctor is too ill to work? I'm guessing they can't sign themselves off.

The same as anyone else I presume, they self certify for the first 7 days and then I guess it depends on where they work.
I certainly know friends of mine who are GPs and they prescribe to themselves when they're ill.

Just watch (geddit?) many of the Top Gear videos and you'll see timing is all over the shop - it's almost like they re-shot some scenes or adjusted the story later on....

Why do analogue faces seem easier to read than digital displays?

Depends on which horse hehe

I think it's merely just the name of the measurement unit, such as; Watt, Kelvin or Celsius. At the most it is or was a rough estimate to the amount of work a machine can generate instead of horses but has been standardised (in various denominations, such as bhp) somewhere along the way. Which is why a lot of countries just use Watts instead.

Apparently, roughly yes!

Asked by my 4 year-old daughter yesterday and I didn't know the answer:

'Why do car dealerships have the boots open on the cars?'

Speaking of Dealers (and I know there are some on the board), do you really get that much 'passing trade' these days? Surely with this site, auto trader etc very few people will actually stop in as they were driving past unless they're really after something specific they just happen to see on the forecourt? Most car forecourts, even the supermarket types, are awash with insignia's, Mondeos, Focus's (Focuses? Focii?) and Jukes/Qashqai's? Surely these types of cars don't generate much 'passing trade' as they're everywhere?

I am sure an actual dealer can confirm but when I was researching the Autotrader IPO the management team explained that the days of the passing trade are indeed numbered.
It’s a win-win for the dealers (and hence Autotrader).
These days apparently people do most of their research online and only turn up to test drive when they are VERY sure about wanting to buy that particular car.
As a result dealers can be located in industrial estates with low rent and zero footfall.
Or even keep a small high-street presence with substantial inventory offsite.
Fewer people just showing up on-spec means you need fewer sales people too.

This is why you see a proliferation of “appointment only but we’re open all the time” type places.

something I've always wanted to know...

What is the thought process here for these plurals?

Mondeos is correct, Jukes is correct, Focuses, OK

Why add the apostrophes on the others?

This. Also, dealers like to put up balloons and so on to make you think that there's some sort of event going on.

Because some sales managers are obsessed with showing the place is open, despite in the main the only days most dealerships are closed now are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Easter Sunday. It's the same mentality that puts balloons up. Everyone in the trade takes the piss but they still do it.

At my end of the trade (specialist Porsches) we get quite a few people wandering in, but only as they're enthusiasts and just want a look around. We get very few buyers who just walk in off the street, the vast vast majority have done their homework online first and come to see one or more specific cars.

Do these wandering enthusiasts ever surprise you, and buy a car?

Not on the whole but I'm always happy to chat about cars with them as it spreads goodwill, they'll tell their friends where they've been and what they've seen and somewhere we might get a deal out of it.

Case at hand today, chap came in, drove a £2k car, brought his little lad in to look at the cars, I spent a bit of time talking to them both about cars, he's not in the market for anything I've got but you never know, his mates might be, or the little lad when he's old enough.
