When you're driving and wearing polarized sunglasses, some windscreens on other cars look like they've got a pinky mirror finish and some look like a pattern of blobs.

Why is that and what are the blobs?
Just the affect of Polaroid lenses. They certainly keep out the glare, but other windscreens appear slightly distorted.
Something to do with 'Triplex' my dad used to say.
IIRC it's the stressed zones in the glass that make it shatter into little cubes instead of artery-slicing shards.

When watching any show set in the USA, where there is some reference to a class activity, why is everything referred to as "101" as part of the name? Eg "welcome to Physics 101" or at the end of School of Rock where they have "Rock Theory 101" and in Orange is the new Black where they started doing building it was referred to as "Construction 101"

"101" is used in American colleges as the number of an introductory class. "Physics 101" would be the first course that a first-year physics student would attend.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/101_(number)

"In American university course numbering systems, the number 101 is often used for an introductory course at a beginner's level in a department's subject area. This common numbering system was designed to make transfer between colleges easier. In theory, any numbered course in one academic institution should bring a student to the same standard as a similarly numbered course at other institutions.[8]

Based on this usage, the term "101" has been extended to mean an introductory level of learning or a collection of introductory materials to a topic."

Course catalogue numbering : Level 1 , first course - i.e. the absolute basic starting point. The next course at Level 1 would be 102, or the first course at the next level would be 201

Thanks, that is helpful (as were the previous replies from other posters)

I haven't ever heard (on TV) anyone referring to anything as other than 101 so didn't get the context around it, but it makes complete sense when explained like that.

Ignoring other functions that multi-function steering wheels may/may not have on VAG cars, why is Audi the only brand of the main four whose volume switch is on the right hand side and scroll wheel on the left hand side? (The other three are opposite)

that's because its a 'passive/aggressive' way of stating 'you know fek all'. Sort of like "you don't know anything about what you are talking about, perhaps you need to attend {subject} 101 to learn about it?".

You wouldn't insult someone by saying "well you know the basics but now you need to complete [subject] 201 to raise your knowledge... "

I don't really know how it entered British culture, probably American comedians or something...?

How do you actually know this....?

Sure someone will say it has something to do with Audi drivers always wking themselves off while driving or something....

I'd like to add to this that my Seat has the volume on the right, but it's cheating slightly as it nicked the interior from the old A4, including the wheel bar the badge in the middle.

Its definitely on the left in the Skoda, which I dislike because I want to use my right hand, relaxingly rested on the window to change volume, but cannot.

it is the only feature which is better in my wife's Corsa.

It's a strange one in the UK as it runs parallel to Room 101 from Nineteen Eighty-Four/the show, yet I'd imagine the US version is more famous even over here these days.

Changed from an Exeo to a Leon last year.
Not sure which is worse, the steering wheel roller swaps, or the fact that the satnav zoom in out dials go the other way too! 10 months in and still go the wrong way on odd occasions.
Still, at least the wheels are easier to clean.

When did it suddenly become acceptable for middle aged couples to go round holding hands? Up until recently the only people who ever did this were 14 year olds or single sex couples trying to make a point. Now you see hand holders all over the place.

As someone pointed out to me - this is an economic move. As long as you have hold of her hand, she isn't in a shop...

Strange comment. My brother in law who is 80 has always, and still holds his wife's hand when they go out. Personally I don't, but maybe your just noticing it, just a thought.

On the other hand, when did it become acceptable to walk blindly around looking down tapping little buttons on phones, and expect everyone to get out of their way. biggrin

Not always, obviously, but...

These "Zika" babies with tiny heads. Are they going to grow up:
a) normal after a growth spurt or two
b) with little heads, but otherwise normal
c) little heads and stupid
