And in some cases the police know they have the clubs completely over a barrel and take the piss on the price and the hours and the numbers of police required.
I seem to recall that Henley Royal Regatta kept getting larger and larger bills from the police for stewarding the event. This seemed to involve a few coppers on motorbikes at key junctions to direct traffic and a few bobbies wandering about.

One year, HRR refused to pay it and employed their own stewards at a fraction of the price. There was no difference and the traffic flowed even better. I think the coppers rather missed their overtime and the genteel days by the river because they dropped the price after a few years.
we just had a chap called Brian at my rowing club, in a hi-viz jacket smile Then again, not much royal about rowing on the River Aire.

why do they have the ring-shaped frame around ladders of buildings? and why is it (usually) only ever put at the very top of the ladder? (usually the top 3-4metres.

protection and at that point you are climbing on/off the ladder so more risk of slipping from it.

Siege of Aleppo.

Lots of civilians suffering, etc.

Why don't the rebels just give up in order to save the civilian population further awfulness?

It is not as if they have any chance of winning.

No one know what the hell is going on there, or who is fighting who and why they are fighting anyway

i wonder that too! when I was little (90s) there used to be a tower in east london (maybe south east, not sure. but from poplar). on the drive home i always noticed that slim tall tower for having 2 flashing red lights on it. Only the 2 lights did not flash at the same time or have the same duration, so they would eventually overlap.

Snobtastic.
No, you miss the point. I think that is fair game. It is a valid (if somewhat pretentious) description. Embellished but sort of truthful. A bit overhyped but just about honest. Saying you have a 2.1 from Bristol when you have a 2.2 from Exeter (or whatever it was) is just a lie and a pretty dumb one at that.

(Just kidding)
No, no, you are absolutely right. Financial services as an industry is probably the most guilty of over-hyping titles. I was a "Managing Director" of an investment bank in my early 30s. I was just decent at my job and they hand out titles like sweeties. I wasn't directing any major strategy for the bank. I was still a foot soldier. Third spear carrier from the left. It was just so I could sit down with important people and my title seemingly made me look important to them.

It's on my CV.

Assuming it's not going to interfere with an aerodrome 150m

https://publicapps.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP%201096%20... says:
CAA said:
Away from aerodromes Article 219 of the UK
Air Navigation Order 2009 applies. This Article
requires that for en-route obstructions (ie
away from aerodromes) lighting is required
for structures of a height (measured above
ground level) of 150 meters (492 feet) or more.
However, structures of lesser height might
need aviation obstruction lighting if, by virtue of
their location and nature, they are considered a
significant navigational hazard.

Aren't 'we' backing the rebels? Presumably 'we' haven't ordered them to stop?

Private number plates. Now most owners seem incapable of displaying the letters and numbers as they should be.

eg, I've just seen GHOST MJ, on a RR ghost and JUS 4 TWO on a porsche cab. no attempt at all to even use the numbers and letters or space correctly- I've written them and spaced them as they appeared.

Do the Police ever take such drivers to task ? Do they make the owners turn up at a station with the correct plates on the car ?

Do plates ever get seized and taken back ?

You see a lot of private, badly spaced plates.

In comparison, how many traffic police do you see simply patrolling?

There's your answer.

I know we've heard a lot about police cuts, etc. But it does sometimes occur to me that the reason Britain is so peaceful is that the average Joe is so used to the idea that we are a safe, honest, wealthy country and have an efficient police force that we don't even contemplate crime anymore and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. IE- the police are only there to catch those who don't self-police.

Is there a graph somewhere of officers/population ratio by year?

Can't they be prosecuted using ANPR or speed camera footage?

they're two "nice" plates that spring to mind- esp the one on the Ghost. probably more interested to know if anyone actually has a plate taken from them for abuse of spacing, sizing ?? TBF they actually made some sense. Most are mis-spelt and you still have no idea what the bell end is trying to say on their plate.

I bet its nil or less than 10 per annum ?
