Why do so many kids have syndromes and isms these days? Aren't they just badly behaved little sts?
It's the do-gooders/societies way of absolving everyone of any responsibility. "I've raised a st kid because i kept him up until mid-night, took him down the pub all the time and fed him skittles for the first 10 years of his life.
Must be ADD..."

Complicated and unclear. Possibilities include (and all may be true):1. Increased (over?) diagnosis due to better awareness, lobbying by patient groups and pharma companies and pressure from society for treatment. Also contributions from poor/lazy clinical evaluation and changes or wider application of guidelines.
2. Increased pressure on children to perform academically, especially from a young age and the search for an easy answer for those who don't meet somewhat arbitrarily defined standards.
3. A massive and sudden shift in genetic/epigenetic/environmental factors resulting in genuine increases in behaviour we choose to define as abnormal. (Seems unlikely to me despite what the anti-science lobby would have you believe).
Of course, they can still be classed as badly behaved little sts as well as having a medical diagnosis.

It's not allowed to be bad parenting or bad teaching. It's definitely not allowed to be the result of social studies twonks replacing old fashioned methods of parenting and teaching with new methods they've £5 says kids haven't changed significantly in thousands of years.

It's only in pretty recent history that the inability to learn beyond basic literacy and numeracy has been an identifiable issue for the vast majority of every population. Not a lot of room for Moderate Learning Difficulties if all of the skills that matter in your community are physical.
It's only in VERY recent history that most significantly disabling genetic conditions have been survivable beyond childhood if not early infancy. Not to mention the question of surviving the attentions of the midwife if you were born with any kind of visible difference in the prewar years.

The ATMs which don't belong to any particular bank, but don't charge for cash withdrawals - how do they make money? They must be expensive to install and keep topped up.
And why do they keep asking if you would like a printout of your balance or to view it on screen... used one this morning and it asked 3 times in total! Do they get a payment from your bank or something like that?
The Banks pay the owners of the ATM for letting their customers use them, the more services they use the more they can charge hence the push for Balance, printed balance etc. I think the legalisation has changed since I left Banking, but it’s a bit of a free for all these days in terms of who can operate ATMs. And why do they keep asking if you would like a printout of your balance or to view it on screen... used one this morning and it asked 3 times in total! The decision whether they charge for withdrawals usually boils down to whether the site owner wants a fee for hosting it - some are happy to have one there as it draws customers also the availability of other machines in the area - the fees for withdrawing money is one of the most despised customer charges in the UK. People will travel reasonable distances to avoid it.
I guess they’ll be the only ones left in the years to come – next generation high street banks (of which there will be a lot less) are going to be more open-plan sales offices – which is what they are, cash handling will be a small window / counter near the back.

Further to the above, have any PHer spotted any cash-free retailers yet? I'm sure I read about, or saw a story about a few on TV a while back, but I haven't seen one myself.
They can't be far off now?
Passed a phone box the other day that said "coins not accepted", does that count? They can't be far off now?

With those mini-flash games that the national lottery website uses, is your hand predetermined when you start, or is it based on some clock based random dice thing each shot you take mid-game?
Predetermined. I've had connection lost a few times over the years on the monopoly game, when you sign in again your are informed the game must be completed from the start, the rolls are exactly the same.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
