I appreciate that there was a music scene in Birmingham in the late 60's and 70's that did produce a lot of great bands, (Saxon were from Barnsley), but considering the size of the city, the UK's second biggest, you'd think that there would be a lot more Birmingham folk in the media.

To name two, Adrian Chiles and Frank Skinner, to illustrate that they do have a presence in the media, kind of makes the point that I was making.

Somebody else is going to come around in a minute and state 'Hey - You've forgotten Jamelia!'

I just find it peculiar.

Could someone please explain to me as simply as possible why the Vietnam war happened and why the technologically superior US lost to the Vietnamese?

1) the NVA and VC wanted to reunify Vietnam as a communist whole and Eisenhower feared a domino effect for other bordering countries becoming communist at a time where communism was seen as THE threat to the west.
2) home advantage.

Why is it that despite Birmingham being the second biggest city in the UK, but you very rarely see or hear a Brummie in the media?

There are loads of celebrities/bands from Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester etc, but the Midlands is like a cultural black hole.
Bristol is a pretty populous city and little escapes here either - suspect it's the accent(s).
Your cockaknees and northern minkies all think we drive tractors and crunch carrots, whatever that means.

The VC also had help from Russia (USSR), China and N Korea. Even before the U.S. got involved they were fighting the French (Vichy) who were pretty tired after WW2 and the Thais etc. so the VC were pretty hardened by then.

Cambodia didn't help matters by allowing the VC to have bases in Cambodia and using their ports plus financing them through dodgy rice deals (which ultimately led to revolts within Cambodia - in the rich rice growing areas - when it stopped) and the then king - Sihanook did anything to stay neutral, including being in bed with USA, France, N Korea, China and Russia!

Still. It didn't stop the USA bombing the feck out of Cambodia. frown

Why did they lose?
I guess partly due to the anti Vietnam war sentiment, the cost, and the never-ending supply of VC troops.
The USA basically left the South Vietnamese to the mercy of the VC when they decided to bugger off.

The Vietnamese did kick out the Khmer Rouge from Cambodia though but who do you think that the Cambodians hate the most? Yep. Vietnamese!

Such bks. Whilst there are a number of big/successful/good acts from that part of the world, 'pretty much every ... of note' is a bit of an exaggeration.

And anyway, don't forget Slade!!

I've been wondering about this.....

I have insurance on my house buildings & contents. My house is mortgaged too.

Assume my house was blown up in an explosion or completely destroyed in a fire or other disaster.

I claim from my house insurance who pay out the value I have insured to rebuild.

Do I have to rebuild my house? Or can I just pay the mortgage off and then potentially sell off the empty building plot?

Any ideas how this works?

It's not as bad as you make out IMO. And I'm southerner!
And the Specials? Richard effing Hammond? Jasper Carrott used to be popular. Red Robbo was big in the seventies too.

Perhaps most Brummies were too busy working (not Robbo) and producing things to waste time on mere artistic extravagancies.

Travelling in a vehicle, let's say plane.

If I jump in the air, why am I not thrown back at the rate the plane is travelling at?

Similarly, a fly, in my car, car doing 50mph, is the fly flying at 50mph also?

I've not read any of this so don't know if it has been asked, but dumbing things down a bit, well a lot;

Driving down an A road or motorway in late summer, you see bits of stray blowing about on the road, soon after, you come up to and overtake a lorry full of bales of hay.

The Questions is;

How far would that lorry have to travel until all the hay is gone?

And then, when the plane meets and collides with the fly, and the fly's direction is reversed, the fly's speed must pass through zero. It follows, therefore, that the plane (attached to the fly at the point of impact) must also be stationary at that moment.

I have a theory that this is exactly what they do. We need to get rid of this straw, can't burn it, we'll put it on a lorry and drive around a bit until it's all gone then come back home. There can be quite a blizzard of it when they first set off.
