If your only on site for a day or two the 90 minute commutes should be fine.

Hotel living is OK, ensure they get you one with a restaurant - very occasionally I used to get stuck in a Premier Inn or similar on the outskirts of Liverpool - it didn't have a its own food but did have take away menus for the local places that you could order - sounds great but a week of stty take away food really takes its toll on you.

Its not a bad life style if you have lots of "you" interests - biking / gym / golf - make sure you take a book to read too.

A couple of nights a week, and being pretty flexible sounds pretty good to me - especially if the job will provide some good experience!

If you are in a relationship I think it can go either way- If your other half is independant and has her own activities etc then it will be a lot easier however if the o/h does everything with you then it may be a little tougher. I have seen the traveling away from home works wonders for some people and for others really puts a strain on the personal realtionships.
I did some work with a guy who'd spent a lot of his career working away from home, his wife was fine with it...until he retired. They got divorced soon after, it seems she was happier without him around all the time.

Yup, takeaways can be the road to ruin. I'm using my staying away in Travelodges at the moment to lose a bit of weight. I usually just have fruit in the evening and I've lost a stone and a half since October. If that sounds awful, think how good odd evenings out with the lads and being at home at the weekends become.

BTDT - would never go back to it. I dont mind the odd bit of travel, I'm off to Germany later in the month and maybe Sweden next month, each for a couple of nights.

There were times when I'd be sent to California for 2-6 weeks at a time. You cant hold down a relationship properly, and friends stop inviting you out to things because they expect you're somewhere abroad. Skyping people isnt the same as being there.

I like a change of scenery so an office doesnt work for me, but there has to be a balance in everything. Mine would be a couple of nights away per month

Although slightly different, I use to work in the oil and gas industry but purely on a call out basis and as such I never had a rota but would get called out on 24hrs notice or sometimes less if it was important. My wife who at the time my finace was supporting and did not mind as she kept herself busy anyway and knew it was for both of us. However it was I who eventually got fed up with eating in restaurants and sleeping in hotels, so I left. It did enable me to see so much of the world and work/meet so many interesting people.

Living out of a suitcase or bag, eating in restaurants soon does get annoying.

I've been contracting abroad since 2006. Since I've had kids I've taken work back in the UK. I'm now 4 on 4 off in London (live in S.Wales) which is a perfect balance for my family. Since 2006 I've had 3 jobs at a commutable distance from home. 2 of those jobs I used to leave home at 04:30 then return at 20:00 6/7 days a week. If I take these jobs again, dispite living at home I would never see the kids.

oil rig workers seem to do ok.

My folks are still together even though my father has done 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off for 40 years.

Never effected my relationship with him either as I got used to it very early on.
But when your dad wasn't on the rig he had 4 weeks at home with you lot.

That's very different to the op having a few nights away and still having to work when he's not away in hotels.

I found it pretty hard going when I was doing it. The eating out wasnt the best for the waistline and I'd often find myself sitting in the bar reading - which meant more casual drinking than would be advised. I found it quite a tiring and lonely experience.

Not too bad, i wouldent really meet many other people other than the other person im working with, the job would be a bit monotamous but easy, and it will be at different places within the south region
I do hate a monotame!

That's quite a bit different then. Personally if I'm away from home I don't mind working long hours, so the idea of doing 3 long days a week and then 4 days off would be quite appealing.

Piece of piss 3 days on 4 days off.

I'm currently doing 8 weeks away and 2 weeks home.

The days occasionally can be like 2 on 1 off and then 1 on 2 off

and on the 3 days the commute is rather long

I normally do 4 to 6 weeks away and 1 week home.
I work out of an Office in Germany and cover North America and India.
As said, only works because my Wife can handle it and I like my job.

I used to work in Europe (nominally based out of Brussels but all over) 4.5 days a week. First Eurostar out on Mondays usually travelling back Friday afternoon/evening, then working at weekends. Nearly broke me, and I ended up splitting from my wife as I never saw her or the kids. Luckily I saw sense and walked away from the job, sorted out my relationship, and I'm a lot happier for it.

I still travel a lot, but it's short stints now (Dallas for 3 days last week, Liverpool the week before, NY for a few days a few weeks before), which is exhausting. The plus is that my normal commute is 45mins door-to-door and I stay in decent hotels and tend to be in Business/First when I fly. Sounds stupid (I'd not pay £4k to fly to the U.S.) but when you're actually working on the flight - and I do - you realise that Economy doesn't work.

But I'd sooner never do another mile of business travel. I've been to over 60 countries, many of which have been for just a few days and where I saw the square root of zero local culture. Just hotels, airports, offices and taxis.
