This is what happens when you pour water over boiling chip fat, instead of doing the correct thing and smothering it with a wet towel.

I learnt my lesson the hard way, many years ago, when I did exactly the same thing in my parent's house when they were away on holiday....they came back to rather a mess...biggrin

The blast blew me backwards through the kitchen door....yikes

Don't try this at home folks.....

When I were a student we were cooking at may mate's house (parent's) and the chip pan caught fire. I did the most sensible thing I could think of at the time and threw it out the window. Set the garden a blaze, cue fire brigade to extinguish.

Was no longer welcome at that joint after that.

I would have wanted a much longer stick before trying that experiment!

Not a chip pan, but a saucepan full of oil. Wasn't heating up quick enough for the chips to be ready with the rest of the meal, so I put the lid on and went back to chatting with my mates and their 3 month old kiddy in the living room. Couple of minutes later, took the lid off and I guess some oil dropped onto the gas hob. Big fire, but had the presence of mind to shut off gas and smother it whilst carrying the burning pan into the garden to cool the oil.

Scared the hell out of me. Haven't had chips since! Or those friends round for dinner!

They clearly knew what was going to happen but that looks like a real house and not a set so - WTF?!

Myth busters did it. The size of fireballs was staggering

The fire brigade did a demo of this for us when we started uni, in a large open space outside. The heat and blast was staggering, frankly. A really good lesson, I mean I knew not to do it, but had no idea of just how explosive it would be.

Who on earth deep-fat fries anything at home in this day and age?

PS - the 'a bit council' thread is over there >

Reminds me of the fire-team training we had to do for being part of the offshore ERT. Enter a steel-pate building dressed in proper gear and wearing breathing apparatus dragging a hose in and down a set of stairs before hunching in a corner, well away from stairs, and hitting a half oil drum full of burning kerosene with water. The ensuing fireball that curled up to the ceiling and flashed over our heads and up the stairs was awesome. Anyone on the stairs would have been consumed!

Aaah!

Scary factoid. More than one person has been 'murdered' by the get them pissed and put the chip pan on after they've gone to sleep on the sofa routine. Allegedly.

I bought one the other day. Not sure breaded camembert is really that council though. I did, however, buy a decent electric one rather than opting for a pan of oil on the hob, and bought a fire blanket to go with it just in case.

Camembert is nicer baked - I'd put the breaded variety on the starters menu alongside the prawn cocktail. smile

TBH you cannot beat chippy chips if they are deep fried in dripping. Oil cooked chips at home in a deep fat dont have the same appeal.

I have found though you can get good chips out of one of those actifry devices if you put some dripping in instead of oil.

If I was using a chip pan, it would be outside and nowhere near the property... think some PHers do this and say its due to the smell rather than so their property don't burn down.

The old fashion chip pan fryers are fking scary...
