Trolling is talked about a lot, but how would you really define it?

I reckon there should be an element of "disruption" to a thread for an accusation of troll to stick.

It doesn't happen a lot, I'd say.

Just because a thread is of minority interest, but is important to the poster .... well, that doesn't make the poster a troll.

If someone really has no interest in a thread yet posts something diversionary (apart from obvious humour, or a straight "I'm not interested") then that could be a troll.

There are plenty of PH examples of minority interest threads, two on the go at present are "Teenager owns a Ferari 458" (including the incorrect spelling) and "Importing a car from malta". Is either of those a troll thread?

Sorry, bit of a Whinge I suppose .........

I'd say entering a thread with no intention of addressing the original point or subsequent points raised in the thread.
My religion poll for example!
BAH!

Good example is the winter tyre thread. Everyone knows they should be law but that doesn't stop people posting they're not needed in the UK, especially on BMWs or Audis.

That's a crap example though, because that's not what trolling is at all.

It stems from Usenet, it's where someone makes a knowingly inflammatory remark purely to get a rise out of others. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a troll.

The media have hijacked it to mean something totally different, like they did with "hacker".

I'd say a lot of your responses where you avoid questions, use emoticons to express your disdain, and name calling.

I also see trolling as people who create multiple threads on what car should they buy only for them to never be in a position to buy or they ignore any advice given.

If it goes below 9 degrees then the rubber your tyres are made of hardens and goes kind of 'plastic'. So they are needed.

That isn't though, it's something else. Sad maybe, but not trolling. Trolling is doing something purely to get a reaction out of others, knowing what you're doing is for that reason.

So what you're saying then is people who may aspire to own a car in a certain group shouldn't be able to ask for advice. That's trolling.

Yeah like coming on a thread and saying things like 'you are PH's new ChrisGB'..........and offering nothing of substance.

I don't think I said that at all. I've already posted it but I'll say it again.

Trolling is posting something knowing beforehand it will get a rise out of others, and the only reason to post it is for that reaction.

Yeah like me asking a valid question on one of your posts and given the run-around, not being given an answer, have you use "hehe" a lot in your non-responses, and calling hypothetical people "knob jockeys", and offering nothing of substance to our conversation. Yup, just like that.

So when you post 'you are PH's new ChrisGB' is that your intention?

Anyway. If you're looking for a 'trolling thread' in all seriousness, look no further than the Tattoo thread. It is terrible for it.

You got the run-around when you took my words out of context. I told you that. Speaking of which, taking words out of context is quite trollish too..........

Well, in my opinion you are. Any thread on religion has you as the main person defending the religious viewpoint, at least recently. Nothing wrong with that of course, just that it used to always be ChrisGB. So, you are the new him in my eyes. I didn't mean it in a negative way, just that you appear to have taken his place.

Had I put "hehe" at the end, as you often do, then that would have a negative slant, at least in my eyes.
