Anyone got some good stories of things they have seen people do to save money,
Just recently heard of someone who will only boil the kettle once and then put the water into a flask for the whole day to be used to make tea or coffee...
My parents used to do that....Just recently heard of someone who will only boil the kettle once and then put the water into a flask for the whole day to be used to make tea or coffee...
I do that when F1 races are on early, boil the kettle, stick it in a flask, then I can make tea without having to miss anything, knowing my luck I'd go to make it just when the interesting bit of the race happens!
Back on topic, wasn't there a forum or people who would turn the engine off and coast along to save fuel ? they called themselves hypermilers or something like that ? bonkers.

Remember, most people are only as tight as their employers force them to be.
Where I work, all the HGV drivers get £20 a month towards our mobile phone bills as we have to ring a lot
of customers and also our own office when we're out n about.
Mr tightwad ,when ringing the office,as soon as he gets through asks them to call him back.
WTF ?....he's getting £20 to pay for these calls, which I regard as generous enough.

I wont name them but some corkers from people I know, I swear all true as may sound like bullst
1. Steal sugar sachets from anywhere to avoid buying it
2. Buying bulk kitchen rolls then offloading spares to friends to recoup cash
3. Syphoning petrol from vehicle to vehicle
4. Only tax vehicles at last moment in person at post office to get full 12 months (i am talking about cheap tax too, cars and motorcycles)
5. Heating never on then slag off 'terrible british winter'
6. Lighting never on or at a minimum - not mood lighting, just tight ass
7. Sharing meals out, supermarket cafe breakfasts etc. You cant buy food any cheaper wtf
8. Flying on malaysian airways after recent tragic events, yes really.
9. Only visit people when 'passing' no doubt to save fuel.
10. Never drive over 55mph
11. Security light on for only 3 seconds
These people have multiple investment and probably circa 150k dotted about in various pots.....
Completely baffling behaviour.

I know of someone who only went out with girl next door because he could share her broadband, this is the same person who would dust his windscreen wipers to stop the dirt wearing them out and took the back seat out of his car to reduce the unsprung weight. He almost had a heart attack when he gave someone a lift due to the reduction in mpg the passenger caused.
Apparently he is a millionaire but lived a very frugal life to achieve it.

I know someone who used to water down the netto cheapo washing up liquid.
Another friend of mine has no heating as he does not want to pay for it. He also has a tiny kettle as he will not boil more than 1 cup of water at a time.
He is 50 and until recently was still wearing his school t shirts.
He only has 1 pair of shoes as well as he only has one pair of feet.
He has a good paid job and is not hard up by any means as he bought his last house for 200k with cash and is looking to buy another one as a cash purchase.

We had some rough mums from the local school come into the pub one day. They walked straight to the cutlery station where they started filling their bags with milk cartons, sugar, stirrers, sauces, napkins etc When confronted the response was "Not illegal is it?"
Mum and dad have an oven with an LCD digital clock. They turn the cooker off at the wall so the clock is off saving them 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000001p per year. They get loads of free, crap veg from the market and spend hours pickling and freezing it no doubt saving them bugger all.

Back O/T, I know someone who re uses tea bags.
My mate has a reputation for being tight, and to some extent he is - his philosophy is to only buy things to replace worn out items, which he applies to clothes, carpets, furniture, cars etc. he doesn't look fashionable and neither does his house. His only extravagance is a good holiday once a year.
His salary is c£35k, and doesn't any overtime possible to boost this to c£50k. He makes a lot of AVCs to his pension.
Through making overpayments, he paid his mortgage off by the age of 40, and saves every spare penny. Now, at the age of 50 he's accrued c£400k in savings, and is packing in work at the end of the year.
