Can we have your stories of people who claim they are skint but are clearly not.

My mate has a nice big house, 2 kids in private school, has cars on leases, ownes his own business.

Everytime I see him he moans about being skint, he then tells me about a horse they just bought, a family holiday they just went on for £1200 and about another holiday they just booked to go on in the same year that is costing £2000. thats 2 holidays in 1 year.

WTF - Am I missing something here.

Parkinson's Law - "Expenditure rises to meet income".

Some people claim to have no money because they pay £1,000 into their ISA each month. It's not really "being skint" though.....

Isn't he just saying he's skint because he has spent his money on all the stuff you mention?

Know plenty of people like this.

Constantly moaning they have no money yet always seem to have some new extravagant purchase splashed across Facebook be it a weekend away, new furniture, new clothes etc. They also tend to have a house full of Apple products, a big TV with every Sky channel going...

No money my fking arse...

Nope, I've got a mate who does the same.

Big house (ok, rented), 6 month old Kuga on the drive, 2 kids (of school age) but his mrs doesn't work, half a dozen times a week he "checks in" on Facebook at Starbucks, always talks about the latest sporting event on Sky Sports.

However, whenever we go kayaking (2 holidays a year) he always moans that it's too expensive, should be cheaper, can someone cover him for this and that, "I'll owe you for the fuel", can't eat at the restaurant etc.

Er, sell the £20k car, send the woman out to work, ditch the £100/mth sky package, stop dressing the kids in OshKosh just so you can show them off in Starbucks...

But then I realise it's none of my business and in 3 years time I'll have fully paid off my mortgage while he still has to find £1100/month in rent just to keep a roof over their heads. Horses for courses.

I'm not sure, I think he has debts, business Loan, credit cards. So why keep adding to them. I bet they could pay off an extra 5-10k If they just had one year with no holidays/horses and rest.

Yes, a really big 'something'. He could earn £1bn a year and, if his outgoings are £1bn a year, be skint.

It may be he is too "skint" to go to the pub etc as they don't consider that money well spent?!?

What you're missing is the fact that you've just explained precisely why he's skint! biggrin

Would you say it would be fair to describe his wife as having 'certain expectations of lifestyle' by any chance? scratchchin

But but but... He's a company director! He deserves to live like that. It's how company directors live!! Whether or not you can afford it doesn't come in to it, got to have the lifestyle you see. biggrin

I know of a couple of people exactly the same. They have an expectation of how they should live their life based on their own perception of how they see themselves. Whether or not they can afford it doesn't seem to come in to it.

Agree with 99% of what you say BUT...

Sky - now that is an interesting one. When I was a student I could easily, without trying, spend £20-30 on a night out. A full Sky package was iirc£32.50 per month at that time. Up shot got Sky and cut down from 3 nights out a week to one or two = saving without feeling that I was actually missing anything.

A good friend of ours, kids both at private school; both very good private schools, brand new 5 series estate and a fairly new MINI Clubman, go on at least 3 very expensive holidays a year, they recently sold their £1m house as needed to free up some money to pay for the second private school, wife is now harking on about buying a Spanish holiday home, however she is always telling the wife that they are skint.

Now; I think she says this to the wife so as not to feel bad, as we aren't that flush, the thing is, we don't care, if you can afford it then good on you.

I'm skint, always skint, i'm also going car shopping for a S2000 tomorrow and again next week for a shed of some kind.

Being skint means i'm not able to spend £50 on a pointless tuesday night out. It doesn't mean i have no money to spend.

Being poor is having no money and i know what that was like which is why i'm skint now. I spend my cash on things i want, un-necessary purchases are not in the plan.

Slightly OT... my colleague bough a Lexus GS because somebody said his old car wasn't appropriate for somebody on his pay grade (they were winding him up). A few weeks later his OH lost her job so he was desperately looking for a way out of the finance agreement.

They were both on good salaries but both seemed to be living quite close to the edge and partly/mainly for "image" reasons.

I don't think so on the holiday front. 5 full days and 4 nights in Prague in mid Feb, 5* hotel on B&B, meet and greet parking, one hold bag, all in less than £400 a head. £25 per head per day for food and drink would not see you missing anything at all over there and most attractions are free or not that expensive.

Or Barcelona for 3 nights and 4 days in early October, 5* but no B&B this time, all else as above, £185 per head and then food which again would easily be covered by £25pppd without being tight or extravagant.

These are not one off mega deals, just the result of an evening or two on the net with no preconceptions as to destination other than 'Europe'.

I'm sure my mate is not the type of person you're talking about but he's always saying he's skint as in he doesn't have money for unecessary toys/entertainment. He's always been like that buying cars in cash ever since college days.

I also know plenty of "broke" people with the latest in everything. They're always the type to wonder how I afford something.
