Usually I just leave it in a nice pile outside my gaff (I do live on a main road)

Every Single time they have been as dodgy as you like but always pleasant and a laugh, they have always knocked on the door to ask as well

Gumtree always has people asking as well

Since the new laws were introduced collecting scrap as a 'job' is nowhere near as appealing.
Hopefully the thefts are down as well then.
Yes they are, also there used to a queue of pie keys at the local scrappy for cash payouts, barely anyone stood there these days.
I've seen whole cars stolen and scrapped before now, they can't do that either (have to prove ownership).
I use a relations remotely situated garage to stash an old car and bits and pieces in there, it was recently broken into, they stole nothing despite it being stacked with stuff they could have weighed in (including alloy wheels). Ok, it might not have been what they were looking for, but you'd have thought they would have taken some stuff if they could have weighed it in.

Having recently gutted and refitted my bathroom, I had a small amount of scrap in skip, rad, a little copper and old bath.

I also had a 4m section of stack pipe that I initially assessed as cast. Having gone at it with a grinder, it turned out to be asbestos. Lump hammer solved that quickly and it was laid out next to skip.

Knock on the door and a request to go through the skip for scrap. After they left, I noticed all the asbestos was gone but they couldn't be arsed to take the bath where most of the scrap weight is.

"Finding" asbestos on the next job they're on will be a decent earner.

I thought that there were ways around the cheque thing? For example the scrappy give cheques and then also cashes them.

Certainly anything metal that's not chained down is still being nicked here.

My local scrap collector won't collect my scrap as I don't have enough. Makes sense.

I heard they pay in cash - for small amounts?

Cheque Cashing is available at Cash Converters (and other outfits) for a fee...
