Real shortage round these parts (Bucks/Herts border), waiting list for the 'good' childminders (who all get paid holidays, and other weird quirks). Demand so high that my wife set up an after-school club and now earns more than me for looking after a bunch of kids for 2 hours a day.
Do you get paid holidays from work?Edited by HQ2 on Friday 17th April 23:30

Being a childminder is a pain in the arse - my ex was one.
Not only do you get the parents who turn up and leave their cars all over the place, upsetting the neighbours, but they turn up late, and then want to stand and chat for half an hour, and then don't pay you on time.
On top of this, you then have to make sure you satisfy all the Ofsted requirements, which are pretty strict, pay for your indemnity insurance, and keep track of what you are earning in order to pay your tax and NI.
In addition to this, any adult who spends more than so much time (I cannot remember exactly how many hours) needs to have a CRB check (or whatever the current equivilent is). I had to have one to be in my own fking house!!! Then, as I worked shifts at the time, there is the problem of having half a dozen kids screaming when you are trying to sleep, or when you have days off in the week, you cannot do any jobs around the house, as you are not allowed to use paint, adhesives, or power tools where they could affect the children.
My ex gave it up after about 18 months and went back to working in a nursery.
