So living in South Wales (Plenty of rural areas to create a safe base but close to the coast for quick escapes) and driving a 4x4 I feel I'm equipped to survive the inevitable zombie rising.

However one thing I have been pondering is the use of Telephones, mobile phones and the internet.
Without human intervention exactly how long would these last for?

Days, weeks, months or years?
Does it come down to the power supply? what if I could supply my own could I still get a connection from my mobile when charged?

With most of the human population decimated I imagine things could be a bit boring so I want to make sure I can still watch "The Walking Dead" for tips and advice and then call my friendly survivors to discuss!

Any ideas?

Are you assuming the infrastructure has power still?

Judging by the number of telecoms "engineering" vans I see around here every day - about 5 minutes. Best get downloading and learn morse code now.

Well that's one of my points,

I imagine without global power all the servers etc would go down quick?
If I could generate my own power and another survivor could we get a phone line in place.

The basic idea of the internet is redundancy, but that said in the event of a worldwide power out you'd soon run the uninterruptable power supplies out.

You could set up a very short range piconet to allow local devices still having power to share information but the internet as we know it wouldn't exist without power.

You'll have nothing, you'll need a transceiver and antenna.

Ok I'm going to need a survivor that understands what that is hehe

I think sharing information has helped humanity advance so I reckon we could get back on our feet swiftly if we had some sort of communication that was more advanced than carrier zombie or tin cans and string.

would there be a way to power two phone boxes so that they can be called?

So imagine a 28 week later scenario where the UK was infected only but the rest of the world was ok, I imagine there would be way to still have mobiles etc that work?

Yes. You just need to move there.

Short version, internet might work, albeit very very slowly, for a few minutes till the batteries on various pieces of kit ran out.

On a more serious note, how long until the power went out - and would it for sure?

Surely nuclear power would keep generating something to the grid, along with the wind sites. As the number of folk drops dramatically i'd expect demand to fall a fair.

Potential for the grid to stay up for a few months?

CB radio will rise again biggrin

I still have a couple of radios myself in the garage as it happens smile

In the event of a total breakdown of society, simple and robust technology and communications will prevail. Smartphones and tablets will be completely useless.

If I was vaguely interested in being an end of the world 'prepper', which I'm not, then I would certainly be looking to equip my 4x4 with a CB radio, HAM radio, a scanner, and a standard AM/FM/LW radio.

For about £400 you would have all your comms needs catered for.

Yep, we're ideally placed to survive the zombie uprising - firstly, anyone who's every been to Merthyr will assume it's already started, which really cuts down on the shock value, PLUS there's a state of the art WHO lab somewhere in South Wales, between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Cardiff which is working on a way to stop them attacking us - Brad Pitt told me.

Anyway, I'd guess the best thing to have would be a satellite phone and a lot of batteries / solar PVs.

How long will the UPS last for when the power drops? Then how do you power an iPhone off a car battery to play Simpsons.....

Edit. Hang on, can a UPS power the transmitters? OK, standby geny, how many have them?

Hit the nail on the head there!

Round here it's all farmers and logging trucks that you mostly hear... And the truck drivers insert a profanity after every single word.
