My job is so boring it is stressing me out...

I work in an office which used to be quite fun and busy, there was always something going on and even though sometimes there was too much work to do, at least there was a buzz.

Now everything has changed and its really getting to me. Due to reorganization and I guess the recent recession the atmosphere at work has changed from being fun to being like a morgue and the work load has dwindled so much that most of the day I end up playing computer games on my computer on the sly just to pass some time.

I am literally bored to tears but still have to look like I have something to do as I don't want to be sacked. I can feel myself becoming more and more stressed every day. I never realized boredom could be so stressful.

When I get home I am mentally exhausted with it all and am frequently in tears and I find myself turning to the wine bottle every evening just to chill out which I know is not good for me.

Well that's my rant over, guess I will have to find some courage and speak to my boss about it. Wish me luck. wink

Definitely talk to your boss about it. I'm sure they would be concerned if you're going home in that sort of condition. I've been there myself when you get home and all you can provide your wife is a few one word answers and a thousand yard stare, then you have a couple of beers and go to bed, and repeat the process again. If you're stressed or bored to tears, it's time to force a change one way or another. Good luck!

I left my old career because I could undertake the wordload in about 2 days. But they wanted me at my desk 8-6 anyways (and yes, I repeatedly told my boss I had nothing to do). There is only so much surfing etc you can do.

I have no stress at all; no one breathing down my neck, decent wage and benefits, radio on, few cheeky naps now and then, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

If I want a challenge I'll do something challenging out of choice like restore a motorcycle, rather than be roped into being stressed and challenged for whatever % of my life a stressful working week entails.
Can i ask what you work as?
Freight train driver. I suppose there's potential for stress and you have to be on the ball, but overall it's pretty straight-forward.

My job has periods of quiet when killing time is tedious. Then at the drop of a hat it'll be incredibly stressful with huge workloads and almost unachievable targets.

The latter makes you appreciate the former.

That is not my present situation, chap.
I was merely using those words as an example (hence the smileys). boxedin

Boring jobs are a trap. An easy life for knowledge stagnation and minimal pay increases. Not for me.
There seems to be an implication that a boring job won't pay as well as a stressful one. That aside, would you really chose a stressful job with the hope that it would increase your knowledge?.

Nothing worse than having not a lot to do. One of the main reasons I left my last job. Couldn't bear it - every day get like three.

At least when busy you have something productive to do and time actually moves.

My stress levels are high, work 15 hours a week where I work, and the stress is full on. However, I live where I work, so the majority of work can be done from home. I get 140 days paid holiday a year, so not all too bad. The best bit is nobody looks over my shoulder when I work. Can't complain. I like it.

As others have said you need a mix of both, we all need a bit of pressure or stress to work at our best. Not being challenged is as bad as being over-challenged.

I have been in the run of the mill companies, plenty of time to do things with little stress but plenty of variety and also in a high pressure startup with loads of stress, ungrateful bd of a boss but a decent salary. Funnily enough I have overall geen happier and lasted longer in the latter job than I did in any of the former low stress jobs.

It also helps to have good colleagues who work hard, pull their weight and you respect, the other aspect of a job is would you rather be a dumb person in an overall intelligent company or an intelligent person in a dumb company?

I need the former to get over the latter. smile
I'm self employed and oddly enough I enjoy not having any work after a busy period, unless it goes on for too long then I get stressed!

Atm my job is a mix of boredom and stressed, stressed cause of the st I got to deal with and bored with the st that going on atm.
I wouldn't mind a busy job if I was left the hell alone while doing it but the fact im getting constantly interrupted while trying to get my original job done.
You think women can be bhy but fk me stick 7 guys together 4 under 25 and 3 over 40 is even fking worse.

But things are good now because it wont be long till im gone from that place and will go and do something for myself to reward myself not some fat lazy ahole who expect everything done his way but is not there for half the time.

Would you rather be in a boring job where you could just browse the internet quite a lot/listen to music.

Or a stressfull job with high pressure.

Just curious, some people seem to like being stressed i dont think its worth it.
Boring is good, I like boring. At work that is. I don't want drama, turmoil stress or deadlines to ruin my working day.

Work is there merely to pay for my home life, not as part of some grand plan to give me a warm glow and feeling of accomplishment every day.
