Business Travel - Company Laptop Policy?

Agreed. We would provide staff with a basic phone and we try and avoid sending laptops. Only access the wifi at hotel and place of work but even speaking to security bods the hotel is considered high risk.

Normal travel, just take my usual laptop and connect via VPN.

Risky places or secret-squirrel material, a lot more precautions are taken.

I literally take the same it equipment as I would anywhere else in the world.

No special rules, if the laptop gets stolen then its backed up elsewhere - and if the phone gets stolen I normally carry 3 at a time so no problem getting the number diverted.

We’ve just had a directive come down that we cannot take laptops capable of getting on the company network abroad on business and have to take a stand alone machine if required.

Engineering/Science R&D organisation (Nuclear).

We're not in a James Bond industry, just a business looking at our approach and it's easy to go a bit mad when you work in IT and come up with something very secure but totally unworkable for the poor sod who's got to live with it - hence the question.

Own laptop, and Siemens company laptop.

Own smartphone.

Some emails are via our vpn, many are not.

For WiFi we're not allowed to use ones that you have to log in to to connect to our company VPN. I've never taken a laptop anywhere particularly dodgy, however I'd done work for one client who wouldn't even let me take their laptop to Germany.

The questions aren't really that relevant. China ranks second highest in the world for cyber crime (after USA) and is the the source of the highest number of Advanced Persistent threat tools.

I cover North America and India as a Consultant to a German company.
This has been a long and successful contract but there have been hurdles to overcome.

First, the gave me a laptop which is renewed every 3 years and travels with me.
The took '7 years' !!!! to issue me with a VPN and so being unable to access my e-mails to their company address, all of my customers and colleagues use my own Company googlemail address.

This years hurdle has been that in February my Company Global ID expired in February. Similar problems result every year but this year, now late April, I am still receiving only about 5 e-mails per day to the company address - its great.

Fortunately business is still running well

I've been given laptops by companies I've worked for, usually they go in the top drawer of my desk and stay there til hand them back in for leaving. The specs are normally crap, I dont want to have too much of my own stuff on one, and half the time I've been working for non English speaking companies anyway, so it's a nightmare on keyboards.

All of the apps we've used have been cloudy, so Gmail or Outlook Web Access, Salesforce or similar, so it's not really mattered what the device accessing it is. For my own peace of mind, whenever I'm not at home and if I'm using either my phone, laptop or tablet to connect to the internet I use a VPN client, and that includes when I'm at the office.

Left my laptop on the tray after security in a Russian airport a few years back. I picked up the keys, put the shoes back on, forgot the laptop.

Was sat having a coffee when a security guard, who was wandering around asking everyone, finally got round to seeing if it the crazy Brit had left a laptop behind. Was quite impressed. Laptop was still in the tray put to one side, no one had nicked it, no one was guarding it.

I did the same in Frankfurt airport, realized I had left my lap top in the tray, went back (after about 5 mins) and had to prove to the very angry may with the gun that it was 1/ mine 2/ not a bomb.


Company policy, and were a global company, is no restriction, don't download prawn.
