Clearly he has issues of some sort as his actions are not "normal".
Agreed. they're not normal. But it's always possible, he's a jumped up, self important, drunk, high, dipst that likes to throw his weight about because "he owns the place"* - It's not on and if he does, the justice/social system can deal with him appropriately * Especially given that he said "if I ever see you round here again, I'll fking kill you"
That aside.
The car has been traced and I got the details spot on (yay me) and hopefully the formal statement will result in something - just a shame it wasn't done on Monday in case he was under the influence.
My other father in law (girlfriend's stepdad) is a cyclist and is ex army having worked his way up from private to Captain and has controlled rage. I've seen him angry, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that... If we'd been with him, I think it may have been a little different as the apple of his eye is his granddaughter - my daughter.
That said, I hope this will end in a result, but will probably just be a caution....

Sounds like just your average gobby knob-end who thinks the world owes him.
Sadly, they are far too common.
I know of someone who used to be like that. He ended up doing it to the wrong person and is now severely brain damaged as a result.
Probably not a very tasteful thing to write, but that's what happened.

There were 2 cars parked on either side of the road, slightly on the curb - My mother in law and girlfriend just passed the parked cars and the car I'd seen before sped through, at speed, noisily and very close to them. At this, I raised my arm as if to say WTF - the gesture was in no way threatening.
Why did you raise your arm? You got yourself involved..and him being close to you is an opinion. There is no weight here as there isn't a video so it's all very one sided.Sump said:

Why did you raise your arm? You got yourself involved..This was the location - car on the left and van on the right:
What was the correct course of action - I will acknowledge that raising my arm might have been inflammatory, but it was a WTF arm raise - not a middle finger, not a shouted insult, no gesticulating, no shouted comment about nearly running them over - nothing to that effect. Certainly nothing that would result in a driver stopping, reversing, threatening to "fking kill us all" twice, calling me what he did (I'll omit that here) or scaring the living st out of my seven year old daughter.
James, if ever a man could take a joke it must be you, you have done the right thing contacting the police. The driver shouting abuse at you actually did well to notice the colour of your skin, most of the people that drive past me when I'm on my bike clearly haven't seen me at all...
This makes me feel sick. It's not so much him threatening and abusing, there's plenty of those out there but to go off like that in front of kids is just unforgivable. An adult might well be rattled but they'll get on with it, a child could be properly traumatised by that sort of behaviour, especially as it's directed at the ones she loves.
Hope you get some sort of result James and that your daughter quickly forgets about it.
Scumbag.

What you're supposed to do is think like the Protection Officer mentality, which is not to react to the aggressor at all, and to remove the persons you're protecting from the situation.Tough to do in practice - even the pro's can't stop themselves jumping on the attacker sometimes. Plus if you'd have ignored the guy he might have escalated his aggression.

I have ignored much idiocy when I'm out on my bike before including having things thrown at me before when it's aimed at me, but when it's aimed at my family, it's a tough one to ignore.
