Many years ago I used to go on family holidays to Spain and suchlike. We were a middle class family and it was noticeable that we were a lot better off than the locals.

Nowadays things have changed, wherever I go I don't feel very well off at all.

I don't mean in places like Bangladesh or Rwanda, what i mean is where can i go where i can live a comparable life to here in the UK but on a significantly lower salary.

As an example, 20 years ago i first went to Florida, meals out were cheap, accomodation was cheap, clothes were cheap and that isn't the case now.

Where do I need to go?

Thanks all.

South Africa looks a good shout.

I wasn't thinking particularly for a holiday, more a place to live and work.

Somewhere that a decent salary went a lot further than here and yes, I agree there are definitely towns in the UK where that's the case too.

We were in Thailand recently and while I know there are cheaper places, it was very cheap for most things.

I am not referring to very personal services and though they were certainly on offer I didn't inquire, honest.

Ex-pat told me some 5 years ago he retired to Turkey for the very same reason you mentioned. He reckoned he couldn't afford to retire in the UK, but could in Turkey.

He bought land and had a decent size house built (with a pool) all for what you'd expect to sell a modest size house in the UK.

Food etc was (is) cheap if you know where to shop.

Clearly not the Costas, but I'd imagine there are regions of Spain, well away from the resorts, where this is still the case.

South East Asia is good in general for money going a long way, parts of Thailand are very western.

I know it's not quite the question you asked but if you chose Vietnam it's the easiest place to become a millionaire in local currency think £30 would give you about 1m Vietnamese dong!

Cost of living in Spain is far below that of the UK. Rent/Food/Bills all much cheaper - stay away from expat/tourist areas to take advantage of it though

Parts of Eastern Europe would be my guess, they have well run bureaucracies as well unlike most poor countries so as long as you pay the bribes you'll be protected. Romania, Hungary, Georgia etc..

You would probably do quite well in India.
They might have more money than you, but they treat foreginers with respect.

Lisbon last year - amazed how much cheaper than expected for a 'major' city.

Bali - rent a nice villa with pool and a maid for <£7,000 per year. Eat great food for under £2 a meal.

Vietnam - very cheap away from HCM City.

Laos - again very cheap.

Rural parts of Spain.

Philippines - very cheap indeed!

I've just returned from two weeks work in Albania (Korce, South East of the country) which also included some time in Macedonia.

Firstly, they are absolutely beautiful places, properly stunning.

Secondly, some brilliant roads for driving.

And dirt cheap. 7 nights in a glorious town guest house, very well appointed and all the trimmings was €151.00. Not per night, the whole stay!

lisbon - isn't that in yemen or somewhere dangerous?

bali - isn't that where they shoot you, kidnap your wife and take her back to somalia?

vietnam - viet cong

laos - monies

rural spain - no internet. Or anything else to do.

philippines - ladyboys.

There's a reason why Britain is expensive.
