My commute of 75 miles to a client can be between 1 and 3 hours each way, which I do a couple of times a week at the moment. Normally I have the radio or my own music on, but I've started wondering if I could make better us of this "dead" time.

Obviously I need to be concentrating on the driving but does anyone use their commute to learn something new (eg from podcasts or similar), or anything else that is a better use of 8+ hours a week in the car?

Spoken word books are good or learn a language via CD lessons?

I tried language CD's but wouldn't recommend them, you really need to concentrate on the CD far more than I consider is sensible when driving.

This. I started but realised I hadn't listened to the CD as I was paying.... almost said "too much", but thought better of it....attention to the driving.

I downloaded a 'learn Spanish' audiobook to listen to on my way too and from work.

Audible won't let me put it on a USB stick, so it's still sat on my account library where it will likely remain.

Just stick the radio on.

I can't believe I've never actually used the podcast app on my iPhone. Thanks for the suggestion... off to the other link to find some podcasts for tomorrow's commute.

I think language is the best one... but only you know if you can make use of it while still paying enough attention to the road. Or if learning a language is going to be any real use to you.

I listen to children's audio books in foreign languages in the car. I prefer learning by talking along to those as I drive. It doesn't require any real concentration, and it does help just getting used to the words and pronunciation etc. Plus you should be able to get them free from torrents so no issues with getting them onto a usb pen, phone or cd or whatever you need for your car setup.

You can listen to it on your PC/ laptop though yes? Download a free recording program, hit play and record the playback to an mp3 file. Move to a USB stick at your leisure and enjoy.

If you have an Aux in jack on your car radio can you play it from the Audible phone app?

By a TVR for the commute, occupy yourself listening to hear if various vital components are failing/ falling off?

free audio books - https://librivox.org/search?primary_key=0&sear...

some of these are good, some ... less so

They are all older books, I found it was a good way to listen to books that you should have read.

I've tried language CDs, but as above, you'll find that as soon as you get to a junction or something needs your attention you'll suddenly find you've missed the last five minutes. What I do is go to the BBD Radio 4 website every month or so and chuck loads of their free downloads onto a Data CD - you're bound to find something you're interested in on there.
