Right, I am in the market for a new decent pair of shades with prescription lenses.

Up until now I have made do with fairly cheap ones (less than £100) to use every day (driving etc)

I now also do quite a bit of cycling and running so could do with a pair that I can also use for sports (made do with none up until now)

What makes matters worse is that I have a fairly rare eye condition that makes my eyes affected by glare (both sunlight and artificial light) more than normal.

Because of the fact that these shades with be used a lot of the time for various purposes and will hopefully go some way to alleviate my condition, I don't really have a budget, I just want the best lenses that you can get.

I went into town today and spoke to an independent optician about some of the Oakleys there.

I tried on these

http://uk.oakley.com/en/mens/sunglasses/polarized-...

(The chainlink) and these looked ok as they seemed like a good compromise between an everyday sunglass and sports version. I think they came out at about £350. These were obviously polarised

Couple of questions - are oakleys generally the best lenses? Anyone any experience of the prism lens?

Am I just wasting my money or are oakleys worth it?

If not Oakleys - who makes the best polarised lens? There seems to be about a gazillion different options out there for lens types etc.

Lastly, will this type of frame make me look like a cock while driving/on holiday?? Is this style a bit 90's now?

I have 5 pairs of Oakleys at the moment eek and if I ever need a prescription pair of sunglasses I wouldn't look anywhere else.

So many varieties of frame, lenses and colours you should always find something that does the prescription job and suits your face at the same time thumbup

is your prescription available with contact lenses?

I'd hate to have to be swapping my glasses with shades all the time. Having lost my glasses in a dark nightclub and having my mates search the floor for them I could never go back.

I have three pairs of presription Oakleys (bought a pair every two years, and my prescription change has been minute). Love them.

I have a pair of plastic framed ones for easier sliding into helmets (selfie 2km above Turkey), but infinitely prefer the two relatively plain wire framed pairs I have for driving, relaxing, etc. Personally I like the one you link to, but possible you may tire of it???

Thanks for the replies.

Just out of interest, why do you think I may tire of them?

Do you think these would be the best compromise between everyday usability and sports out of their range?

Edited to say, cant stand contacts, just find them uncomfortable.

Would rather swap between normal glasses and shades than fiddling about with contacts as well.

No profound reason - I just ended up prefering my wire framed pairs - similar to this (might be older versions):

Cheers. I was going to go for something like this, but i think that the plastic frame ones are going to be a bit more robust for sports. As I say, i only want to buy one pair, so they need to be a good all rounder.

Plastic is more robust, but they must be 'destroyable' - I've had metal ones bent out of shape in impacts twice, and repaired to absolutely as new condition free-of-charge by Oakley (apart from new lenses on one occassion). Decent optician should give better informed advice though.

I've just picked up two pairs of these with prescription lenses, http://uk.oakley.com/en/taper/product/W0OO4074 one pair with the standard black iridium and one pair with reactalight/transition lenses.

The quality of the lenses is superb and I was shocked by how fast the transition lenses started to work, previous, non Oakley lenses have taken a few weeks to get up to full speed on the change but these were fast straight out of the box.

I'll be looking for a pair this year too. Have 4 pairs of Oakley sunglasses, sadly now need prescription lenses so they're just gathering dust.

As long as you've got your written prescription and don't feel the need to have a 'name' on the arms then go here: http://www.zennioptical.com/men?mkwid&pcrid=74... and save yourself a packet, they do prescription eyewear from £4.

Takes a bit of navigating but they stock over 1000 different frames and you can choose any lens in any colour, any size and with graduated tint, full tint, photocromatic, polarised, mirror, anti reflective, you name it they'll do it.

I'm on my 3rd order, very pleased with the lens and frame quality, I pay £5 shipping worldwide, normally on my doorstep within 5 days.
