Odd, isn't it. PH is a loosely car based place. Yet you don't worry about VED, once road tax, now just a straight tax on car ownership based on fuel consumption, where usage is extra taxation.

Would you be happy if the TV licence remained unchanged, with perhaps a 100% markup for 50" and above screens, and every channel subscription only?

Careful what you wish for....
Nail on the head. Pay for what you use. Don't pay for what you don't use.

Having sampled some TV abroad, I quite like the BBC and am happy to pay the licence fee. If the BBC were forced to generate income we'd have ste like 'I'm a c list celebrity....' And big brother that are cheap to make, suit the masses of inbreds that sit at home watching TV every evening and have little to no intellectual value. There would be no top gear (or it would be sanitised. Sorry Jeremy you can't say that the new Astra is st, they've paid for an ad in all three commercial breaks), no BBC natural history unit that has produced some of the best TV in the past thirty years and lots of other examples. I just wish there was a radio '1.5', I feel too old for Radio 1 yet I find a radio 2 utterly dull. I have no interest in 50's and 60's music beyond a few acts and songs and there's far too much chat on R2.

The BBC is quality most of the time. I'm watching the Foo Fighters live, without a break, something I won't be able to do without paying nearly £100 for tickets. If you were a local to Norwich they were giving away tickets for FREE.

Long live the BBC I say.

Get over yourself. The TV licence is required to watch ANY live TV, not just the BBC.

40p a day is peanuts to pay for the quality of broadcasting that we receive in the UK. Spend a weekend in the US / Canada / Australia, watching and listening to the drivel they have to put up with there and then see if you really want to stop paying for the licence.

Honestly, for the general high quality of broadcasting we receive, the TV licence is the bargain of the century.
No one in Australia watches TV anyway. They don't need it. Either they are too far away to receive anything or they are all down the beach putting another shrimp on the barbie.

Like it or not the BBC have had a massive influence over the music that we all enjoy today.

Without them and their broadcast of innovative output the music scene in the UK might be influenced by commercial/local radio.

Imagine that?
I would have thought that crap like x-factor have had more of an influence in the last few years by looking at the charts.

perhaps in the past fifteen years but there was a time when if you didn't get played on Radio one and appear on top of the pops then You didn't stand a chance.

Is there any other national radio station that plays the kind of music they do? (And I know some of you will say 'no, thank god!'

I don't own a TV but am still happy to pay licence fee for the sheer brilliance that is Radio 4.

Personally I don't care how much it it or what it is used for, It could be £1000 per year or more and I still wouldn't care, why? Because I don't have any need for it so it doesn't interest me. Just like fishing or piloting a plane doesn't interest me.

What I do have a problem with and why I feel so strongly that it should be abolished and every worker should catch syphilis is because on a monthly basis I am called a lying piece of st and threatened with all sorts of unspeakable things. Telling me things like dirty old men in raincoats will need to snoop around my gaff or I'll be off to court but should be thankful because I can take their propaganda leaflet into court with me.

I have even had arsoles at my door interrupting my peaceful evening trying to question me, what the fk has anything go to do with them. I'm not a tt to many people but these nasty little jumped up pricks deserve everything they get.

I lived in the US for 6 years and suffered their interminable ad breaks and largely rubbish programmes. In comparison the Beeb is worth every penny, no adverts, some great stuff on telly (and some crap) and brilliant radio in the form of R4 R3 and R6, not to mention some excellent local stuff and TSM.

You don't need to worry about adverts if you know where to look. A quick example is San Andreas is available to watch right now for free on the internet. I started watching it before but got called out.

Edit : I think its actually a low rent rip off, no wonder it looked st.
