Spurred on by the Gloucester Cheese rolling, do you have any local notable events that are unique to your region and worth seeing? There are some really interesting things i can think of, but would like to know more up and down the country.

They are usually things that are inherently dangerous or politically incorrect!

For example:

Burning Tar Barrels; Ottery St Mary Devon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmznuVOQbXY
Severn Bore Surfing: Gloucester onwards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKA39LQOIck
Gloucester Cheese rolling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmnjHu4PwGc

What other eventscan you add to the list?

Not far from here there is Worm Charming during summer, though I'm not sure how widespread that is.

Not necessarily "local" but definitely odd:

The local Highland Games used to have Savile as the 'chieftain' which would be enough of an oddity.

Closest odd event that goes on here is the Dorset Knob Throwing and food festival
https://youtu.be/HhTUQe498F0

I actually went to the Gloucester Cheese Rolling event this weekend and chucked myself down the hill, didn't win a cheese though. Pictures and vids don't do the hill any justice, that sucker is steep!

it's a lot bigger deal now than it was when we did it. then it was just a bunch of nutters getting muddy once a year smile

The Windlesham Pram Race.

http://pramrace.com/

If you were to get drunk in fancy-dress whilst pushing a friend in a home made pram in windlesham any other day of the year they would call the police. On Boxing day they close the roads and let you do your best/worst to make a fool of yourself.

I'm in North Yorkshire so probably loads. The first one that comes to mind is the Knaresborough bed race http://www.bedrace.co.uk/

We have "The Coconutters" near me. Basically, grown men black up and do Morris Dancing for some reason.

I am amazed that that has not been stopped in these politically correct times.

Until Health and Safety banned it in 2010 we had the 'World Flounder Trampling Championship' locally.
