I remember a cafe that used to close for lunch.
Not sure if you're joking or not but there was one in Rotherhithe that would close every day, 12 to 1.
This was Sussex, in the '70s, but same arrangement iirc.

I could never quite get my head round it, but if you knew another maybe it wasn't as uncommon as I thought.

I worked in Heacham on the North Norfolk coast for a few months and the Fish and Chip Shop closed at lunch, bizarre!!

Some people in our Town still close Wednesday afternoon too. Strange in a time where many open 7 days a week.

Sheffield Wednesday FC (and the cricket club that preceded them) were founded by shop workers and owners who could only play on Wednesday afternoons, their half-day off.

I've never understood this. It's the only club I've ever heard of called ....Wednesday, so who did they play?

I can vaguely remember this. I thought it was due to the power shortage as a result of the miners striking? Save some power for half a day a week. I can certainly remember lots of power cuts in the mid-1970s

Up to the 70's every town had its Wednesday League. Sheffield Wednesday moved up but kept the name.

Quite frustrating.

Look for shops and restaurants that have the phrase "non-stop" in the window. wink

Call me old fashioned, but I quite liked the old half day closing on Wednesdays and complete closure on Sundays. IMO, the pendulum has swung too far the other way nowadays.

We used to close half day Wednesday , all the FT staff used to get paid 41.5 hours a week iirc.

Opened 6 days a week , staff took less dinner breaks got paid 40 hours and got a day off midweek.

Win win for everyone , turnover up costs down slightly and less time at work for the staff.

The football situation on a Wednesday pm reminds me of my old man used to play in a local league for trades who only could play Wednesday afternoon. , that was over 50 years ago mind.

I remember as a kid when nothing was open on Sunday, apart from the newsagents until noon, shops opened at 9 am, shut for lunch 12 til 1 and closed at 5pm.

So, when you were working you could only ever buy anything on a Saturday, which was a traipse into town.

I hate to say it, but I like it now where I can order anything at any time, it was st before really wasnt it, all that going between shops asking if they had item x, "No but why not try shop Z down the road, they may have them", sod that.

What we really need is 24/7 supermarkets.

This business of closing on a Saturday and Sunday is just plain ridiculous frown Scotland doesn't have any problems with doing it 24/7.

The army & navy stop work and play sport on a Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for me the RAF didn't follow that tradition. (And sadly for the army the Enemy don't play sport on Wednesday afternoons, I think it might be Tuesday's)

Is that like arts and crafts for those who can't/won't do sport?
