Beard etiquette
Discussion
I'm sporting a fairly large beard at the moment. People either seem to love it or hate it, but it does attract a lot of positive comments (and fondling from random drunk women in bars!).
Not sure how long I'll keep it though, it's definitely a lot more hassle than the short beard I had previously. It needs conditioning every couple of days to keep it soft, combing daily to avoid the wild man look and trimming every week or so to keep the shape.
Close-cropped beard is probably the optimum appearance/effort ratio.

I've heard it all now.
I don't think beards have quite the impact people who wear them think they do. I can't be alone when I see a beard on a guy under 50 I assume he's a homosexual.
Why is that, are you scared you might give in to temptation and sleep with him? I don't think beards have quite the impact people who wear them think they do. I can't be alone when I see a beard on a guy under 50 I assume he's a homosexual.
3 of the first 5 replies were on the same basis. As I said I'm far from alone.
Had a wee goatee last year after letting it grow on holiday, then started to cultivate it and trim it with clippers.
Bumped into a mate who I hadn't seen in ages and the first thing he said was "Look, it's Rolf Harris!"
Lasted a few months with it before shaving it all off, haven't been tempted since.

I'm thinking that's a good call. Not sure how long I'll keep it though, it's definitely a lot more hassle than the short beard I had previously. It needs conditioning every couple of days to keep it soft, combing daily to avoid the wild man look and trimming every week or so to keep the shape.

I've clippered mine to get it all the same length. Now I'm letting it grow. I did wonder how you maintained it once it's out grown the clippers. Do you comb and scissors it yourself?
I don't like shaving, so I'm currently enjoying the once a week trim n edge.
I do feel the need to cultivate a handlebar to see if I like it, and the full beard is a way of doing it incognito. Without having to guess the best place to shave upto.
Since taking a break from fast cars to raise kinder, I'm enjoying this new, ultimate slow paced hobby.

No. I have a beard because I can't be arsed to shave. Not because I want to join some special bumming club.
This,In fact I have started shaving more recently as I am sick of people presuming I am trying to look "cool". I know i'm not cool, i'm just lazy!
Though as you age you care less about what others think.

Comp first, then clippers with a ~no.4 guard on the sides to blend with my sideburns. The front I just gently trim freehand with a short guard on the clippers, then no guard at all to tidy the moustache. Finally a razor to clean up neck and cheeks and it's good to go. If I tried using scissors looking in the mirror I think I'd end up stabbing myself in the eye!I've clippered mine to get it all the same length. Now I'm letting it grow. Bear in mind I'm no expert though, still figuring it out myself!

My 10YO Son and his mates call them "Beardoes."
A man with a Beard is a weirdo, so "Beardoe" was born.
One of his teachers has a Hostage beard, they all call him the Mr Beardoe.
Just sayin like.
That's fine; since I have zero interest in attracting 10 yr old boys, I won't let it worry me. A man with a Beard is a weirdo, so "Beardoe" was born.

Just trimmed mine right down, I got to about an inch/inch and a half in length and it got to that messy stage much like when you are growing your hair; first of all it's ok and then all of a sudden it's a mess and needs to grow through the mess before it starts looking ok again. My mum was also over a few days ago and asked if I was planning on taking a trip to Syria!
I popped up to the bathroom to see what I could do to tidy it up and just though "fk it" and took it right down to a grade 3; I think, I'll grow it again and still carry on putting beard oil in it and see how I go.

Be sure to wear your hair in a top-knot too. If you want to be one of the super duper premium beard wearers, be sure to have undercut hair at the sides, and to wear thick plastic rimmed spectacles, whether you need eye correction or not.
Speaking as a 40-something bloke, I'm quite happy for the 20-somethings to look like that, it makes them look older than me!

I get the barber to trim it up every week or 2 depending on how I'm feeling/it looks. Takes 5-10 mins at most. Where about are you? My barber is in Twickenham and is very good.
Other than that just take car of it - shampoo/condition regularly, a bit of oil to stop it looking straggly and a quick blow dry to straighten it out.
As Mr Will said, I get plenty of compliments and people wanting to talk too. Plus lots of girl seem to love it. Which is nice.

Ah yes, but when you are walking down the street with your Beard loving Women arm in arm, a 10YO boy may shout " Beardoe "!
To which your Ladies and members of the public may think he shouted " Paedo " leaving you with irreparable damage....... exactly, you must think outside the box, get it off.
No,they are shouting"BEARD-HO", in the manner of sailors shouting "LAND-HO",as a particularly magnificent specimen of face foliage hoves into view, and they are alerting all around to your awesomeness! To which your Ladies and members of the public may think he shouted " Paedo " leaving you with irreparable damage....... exactly, you must think outside the box, get it off.
I have a beard, quite a short/tidy one. I don't subscribe to the whole 'beard culture' because it's a bit OTT, but I grew it because I don't like shaving, as I get problems with infections and ingrowing hairs, so having a beard is much more comfortable. I expect someone will tell me I'm doing it wrong but even so I can't really be arsed dicking around in the bathroom splashing around scented lotions and doing warm compresses on my face every day.
For the first few weeks I got a bit of stick about it, because obviously facial hair is so unnatural compared to covering your face in factory-made foam and pulling a razor across it. I actively enjoyed knowing some people didn't like it though so every mm of growth was another tiny, very petty victory.
