Whereabouts on your arm does one normally have them then? I've only ever seen people wearing them around their upper arm

My old Grandpa used to wear them when servicing his Triumph Dolomite.

And a tie too.

Aren't these supposed to be paired up with headgear consisting of a half moon sun visor?

IOnonsartorialN, I was checking daughter's car on AskMID yesterday to make sure the policy is now showing ok. You know you have to type in a few numbers or letters into a box to prove you're not a robot? No big deal really. But how about a small essay?

My dad wore arm bans in the fifties as not only were they fashionable but also it saved him having his shirts altered to make the sleeves shorter. He was a designer in the days of drawing boards and wearing sleeve bands saved chaps from dragging their cuffs across their drawings, to the detriment of both drawing and cuff. I suspect they were fashionable because there were so many drawing boards in use and chaps looked smart. Wearing arm bands was eminently preferable to rolling up your sleeves. He would have despaired of most of the drawing offices I've worked in where most of the inhabitants looked as if they had dropped in to get warm.

I currently have no portable telecommunication device. I am awaiting the delivery of a new (well, second hand) one. So far this has been liberating and disconcerting in equal measure.
