Why don't people want to say what they do for a living?

Whenever I ask someone they seem evasive and not want to say what their job is.

It's always "I'm a businessman"

Yes but what business?

"All sorts"

Ahhh what specifically?

"This and that, you know I'm in business"

Are people ashamed or embarrassed ?

I just find it odd.

Yes. They think whatever they trade in is dull. Either that or they are in the business of working for someone doing a generic job. I notice you are a company director, what do you do for a living?

Maybe too polite to tell you to mind your own business.

Are you duncan bannatyne?

I have always wondered this exact thing. I am a nosey person though. I like to know what people do and how much they earn and then I use that information to plan my strategic take over of the business world and make billions....
for the moment i work in security but studying aeronautics. Future ceo of emirates (if anyone knows how to get there let me know)

It's called conversation. You meet someone and generally one of the first things most people ask is "What do you do" it's perfectly normal.

I find it bizarre when people want to know what you do for a living.
Why swerve any conversation towards work?

The amount of work I get through chatting to people I've just met is amazing, I'd be mental not to tell anyone my trade.

Surely the standard answer to this is "as little as possible for as much money as possible"

Because some people actually have interesting and enjoyable jobs?

I don't either because you get invited around peoples houses and while there they start the old "while you here can you just look at my pc"

I'm not even sure they want to know me rather just get free IT support, if they understood I'd tell them I work with vmware and EMC san and the last time I worked on a pc was 10 years ago

I'm sure a bricklayer isn't asked to build a wall every time he goes around someones house.
