Why don't people want to say what they do for a living?

Mine is just a pain in the arse to explain.
I try to fob them off with "I'm a mechanic, on a ship".Then comes the usual "Oh, you're an engineer. Chief engineer?"
And when I say no, it invariably leads to "Oh, so what sort of stuff do you work on?"
Then ensues a conversation where i try to explain seismic oil exploration in basic terms.
Really I want to say "Like you actually give a fk?" but I don't.....

That would probably be an interesting convo for me. Then comes the usual "Oh, you're an engineer. Chief engineer?"

But do you really want to talk about your work to some stranger with barley functioning brain about it?
I still feel in the UK "we" don't really have the art of conversation and I definitely include myself in that. When traveling I always seem to have better conversations with strangers and no jobs are ever mentioned and neither is the fking weather.

Do you enjoy it?
If so, you shouldn't be sheepish. Too many people put too much stock in other people's opinions!
Yeah it's a pretty good gig, especially as mountain bikes are my number one thing in life (cars are #2, sorry PH). As alluded to by a few in this thread my enjoyment of the job certainly goes a long way to make up for the meagre pay, but I must admit I am getting restless and I hope it will soon be time to move on to bigger and better things now that I have finished my degree (I started late y'see; I was a positively geriatric 24 years old in my first year, hence now getting on for 30 now that I've graduated)If so, you shouldn't be sheepish.
