Definitely not 1927. More like the 1907-10 period. And, in fact, it's highly likely that the aeroplane and airship have been "photoshopped" (the old fashioned way) to make the image look modern for the time.

It was not unusual for postcards of that period to have artifacts of modern transport technology inserted into the original image. You often see street views for example with cars or motorcycles superimposed.
Looks like the same fence that is still there, unless memory fails from 10ish years ago.

A lot of early pre-WW1 flying was done on the plain so seeing an aeroplane over Stonehenge at that time would not have been THAT rare. However, that picture does definitely look like a typical Edwardian post card with a bit of modern machinery slotted in for effect.

Buffalo Bill Cody used to fly his boxkite plane on Salisbury Plain, so it is in a way feasible that this photo is genuine. But for an airship to be there at the same time seems a bit implausible.
OK, so the airship is real but the plane was added later.

Artillery Observation, so there are Artillery Officers present with their dogs.....and as we (ex Army types) know....they have dogs because two brains are better than one.

The first airships used by the army were given the Greek titles "Alpha", "Beta" and "Gamma". There is a Beta Road in Farnborough - called after one of the airships.

This Cody wasn't actually "Buffalo Bill" Cody. This chap was Samuel Franklin Cody. he was no relation to Bill Cody. In fact, his real name was Cowdery but he also ran a wild west show similar to Buffalo Bill's so he "borrowed" the original's surname. I doubt that the real Buffalo Bill was very impressed but as far as I know, there were no law suits against S F Cody and his Wild West Show. Different times, I guess.

Cody also built his own airship which he called "Nulli Secundus" which means "Second to None" - a bit of a swipe against the Army's airship naming system.

Descendants of S F Cody still live in the Farnborough area.

Looks like a car accident on the road going past it....AGAIN !
(being a local).....Actually. The road with the cars on is the now closed A344 and the one running through the airfield is the A303. smile You can tell by the location of the "heel" stone. smile
