They sounded like the type of parents that would feature in a Channel 4 documemtary today. It shows that cruelty and desperation are not a new phenomena.

If this sort of thing interests you I can recommend the book "Century One Hundred Years of Human Progress, Regression, Suffering and Hope, 1899-1999"

It's a proper heavy weight, packed with images from the 20th Century. You'll have seen some of them before, however many were new to me.

You can now get a "small" version which is a reduced in size, version but it's not as impressive as the original.

That's bizarre. Wonder what sort of round that fires.

It's a detector, sort of like a giant ear-trumpet; a passive pre-cursor to radar.

They aren't supposed to be the same people in the same picture at the same time.

This is one I've seen a few times over the years, it's a horrible, horrible picture which illustrates the evil Men can do when we set aside humanity for money.

That other photo purely demonstrates how the selfie was taken.

In Rwanda during the 94 genocide Belgian troops were offered to the UN mission but were refused on the grounds of their colonial history in Africa.
The taking of hands & arms is still commonplace. I worked in Sierra Leone during the RUF/SLA civil war in 99 on a private security contract &
we were escorting medics into the bush to outlying villages north of Makeni & the RUF were hacking off hands & arms (long or short sleeves Sir? You choice)
as part of their 'liberation' campaign. If they encountered villages loyal to the govt they would also on occasion hack off new mothers breasts with knives or machetes to prevent them from feeding the children. Ethnic cleansing of sorts.
I also worked in Nigeria in 95 & the same levels of brutality were happening there. I love Africa but its mostly a chronic sthole
