I can't stand sunbathing either. If I go on holiday, I do city breaks. 2 weeks on a beach and/or by a pool is wasted on me.

I went to thailand in December.

The culture was fantastic, in the hotel next door they had an elephant. We met a couple that for two weeks didn't even leave the hotel.

They could have gone anywhere....

Madness.

Oh I got 2nd degree burns the afternoon I did sit by the pool.

Suntan lotion helps - factor 100 if you're prone to burning. HTH. biggrin

No, can't bear it. I get hot, irritated and sweat. You can't see the pages of a book to read and in any event I get hot so want to do something else... And boring, so boring.

We don't do beach holiday, always have to go somewhere there are other things to do.

I don't sunbathe but like sitting under a brolly by a pool and reading. Order a beer then have a swim then a nap, more reading, lunch and a few glasses of wine, sleep, swim, read.

3 years ago in Mexico we only left the hotel once in 2 weeks. Amazingly relaxing holiday.

I've now got a 15 month old daughter so all that has gone out of the window.

I will step forward on this to buck the trend of posts. My working days are full of getting around, meeting people, solving problems, communicating and negotiating.

When I go on holiday, some of it will be spent sunbathing. I love the feel of the sun on my skin, and a cold one or two to go with it and a cooling dip in the pool every now and again is ideal. Sure, other times we walk, get on a boat / hire car, eat out, take in the sights, do a trip and all that but there is a place for it when I am way to just unwind, empty your head and enjoy the type of weather and pool life that I do not get in the UK 50 weeks of the year. A leisurely walk along the sandy beach's water edge in the evening cool after dinner is just heaven. We are fortunate to live on the coast in the UK and frequently hit the beach with a bbq and a few activity games, but really don't get the holiday weather to sunbathe too often.

Personally, I couldn't think of anything worse than being cooped up with others in some kind of constant activity holiday, like a safari or a cruise or getting on some kind of coach most days to travel hours to a facsimile market or old relic packed with sweaty Brits and hassling locals. It is all about the blend, and for me sunbathing has a place.

Mind you, a week on a paradise island of a few hundred square metres in the Maldives was a bit too much sunbathing. Two weeks would have been boring as hell.

I love it for two weeks a year. Couldn't do it when I was younger but now to sit in the sun or shade and do absolutely bugger all is bliss.

Wasn't possible a couple of years ago as even on holiday the kids needed entertaining but now they've flown it's just me and the Mrs.

At home there's work work work all week. then at the weekends there's always something that needs doing or somewhere to go. So once a year to think sod it, I'm doing nothing is brilliant. No guilt, just read a book and have a beer or two. With the odd swim in between to cool off.

I purposely don't want to go anywhere exotic as then I'd feel guilty not getting out and about seeing the culture, sights etc. Nope, just a beach, sun lounger, book, sun and beer is all I need. Spain is just fine. Minimum air time.

It does take a bit of practice, loosing the guilt of doing bugger all is the hard bit, but once you get the hang of it there's no looking back. Get home totally recharged and ready for another year in the rat race.

I prefer poolside to beach, the last sun holiday we went on consisted of 4 days sat by the pool with my headphones in half the time, and listening to her the other half, only moving when the glass was empty or I was hungry. Very relaxing to just do nowt

I can not lay still and fry in the sun. Whilst I know sun tans aren't good for you, I still find it odd that people may say, "Oh, you've got a good colour/glow/tan."

However, we're off on our 1st proper beach hotel family holiday at the end of this month in Crete. I'm really looking forward to it. The hotel has 3 pools, 1 being a 50m lap pool, and the hotel's only a very short walk from the beach.

There also happens to be a very large hotel next door with a 5* PADI dive centre - I've dived there in the past.

I won't be sunbathing much!

We spend 2 weeks in ibiza lying by the side of the pool and the odd trip to the beach.

Kids just want to do the club activities and swim and play with others which suits us just fine!

I’m off to Rome on Thursday and it will be stupid hot. I’m planning on a good mix of sights, culture, walking, beer, music, food and maybe on the last day a couple of hours by the pool. I’ll only do this with my travel speaker and when there’s a waiter on hand to fetch more beer. I’ll probably get bored after 30 minutes and go for a walk.

I work a 55 hour week each week, spent in the office and travelling around the country.

I get up at the latest 0600am every week day to accomplish this, and am rarely home before 1830

Weekends are spent doing house jobs, shopping, cleaning, exercising.

For 50 weeks of the year; this is fine - I like my life

But for 2 weeks of the year; I like to sit in the warm sunshine, reading a book (or 7) with a Pina Colada beside me and people-watching.

Horses for courses.

I like doing it for a couple of hours a couple of times during the week.

Usually rent a villa with swimming pool so kids can look after themselves and I can read a good book (or 3) whilst drinking Sol. The only issues being the wasps attracted by the wedges of lime. hehe

I also don't really 'sun'bathe, I tend to hide from it and wear factor 30 suncream... South of France sun is a killer, I really pity these people who decide to go lobster red at the start of their holiday.

Can't wait for the end of the month now!

Discovered there is a proper karting track 5 minutes from the villa I just booked for week after next driving

That's the boys sorted, girlies can stay by the pool or on the beach.

I find sunbathing boring. I don't mind sitting round a pool for a bit socialising and having a couple of cocktails, but I prefer to do and see more on my holidays.

I'm done with beach holidays now. I went to Mauritius a couple of years ago and despite being a beautiful place, there wasn't really much to see and do. In the future, I'll stick to holidays in America where I can rent a car and travel.

Sunbathing can be dull but sometimes there is nothing nicer that the feeling of sun on your skin. On holiday I spend about 90 percent of my time in the pool anyway. I thoroughly enjoy just floating and bobbing about in the water. Lovely.
I don't like beaches though. I live about 200 yards from the beach in Torbay but I don't really like it that much. Warm sea is good for about 20 minutes then I want a swimming pool again.
