Proper wax jackets/coats tend to stink. Keep it in the garage or shed.

I guess you've not had one for a while? I know Barbour (and probably others) don't use the same sort of wax as they did years ago. My oldest wax jacket is only about four years old, but none of mine smell at all. I did handle a very old (sixties) Barbour Solway once, and the wax finish was horrid - almost as if someone had rubbed Plasticene into the fabric.

Anyway: OP, try to pick up a new or lightly-used Barbour on eBay, or even from one of their outlet shops. You'll save a packet on your estimate of £300. I bought a brand new Fog Parka for £80. Admittedly, it's not £30 though, but how much of any sort of coat do you expect to buy for £30?

e: I won't comment on the picture just posted as personally I can't stand the quilted jackets.

Mine definitely had a distinct smell to it, but that may have been sheep's afterbirth as much as the wax hehe

OP, why a wax jacket? There are lots of modern alternatives....

I have a RAB Mountain Dru jacket that I picked up in the sale for £99 - it's brilliant. Much more breathable than a wax jacket.

I have a wax Barbour that is older than I am (23) and it still looks really good and is nice to wear. Used to belong to my Dad until he fancied a new one, so I got it.

Didn't wear it for a year or so after getting it, but I am really warming to it now. If you are looking to keep it for a long time, I can testify to the longevity of Barbours!

Different strokes I suppose - not everyone chooses things for utmost utilitarianism. I like wax jackets for the way they age and develop character - like a leather jacket but without looking like you wish you were Tom Cruise. That said, I like my Nike trainers because they're completely synthetic and don't patinise and I can just keep putting them in the washing machine to make them look new.

There's no pleasing some people (me)!

I've got the Barbour Commander which is based on the jacket worn by Bond in Skyfall

Superb coat that you can wear smart or casual.

They are very nice. I had one of the actual ToKiTo Skyfall jackets with the hood, but that version had a huge stormflap that buttoned across inside and I couldn't get on with it. It either looked rubbish hanging loose or was uncomfortable stuffed away inside - the jacket's a slim fit anyway and it was dead awkward with the extra fabric. But the Commander doesn't have that flap (or the hood, unfortunately) and is terrific.

I think it's safe to get one now that all the pretend Bonds have stopped wearing them all the time!

As a farmers son, go to a farming shop, the type of clothes shops that sell wax jackets will sell expensive ones that make you look like a townie biggrin

Mole Valley Farmers are good are good if you're in the South/West. SCATS used to do a good range but have turned in to more of a garden centre these days. Dunne what the equivalents are if you're further up North though.
Mole took over Farmway up here in the North and are branded Mole Country Stores. BATA covers North and some of East Yorkshire.

Get hold of a Barbour Northumbria - this was a heavyweight coat with a dark brown rather than green colour & a bit drier `finish`. It hardly matters how old it is - reproof it & it will see you out. Happily stands up to thorn bushes, shotgun pellets, cowhorns etc. Several on ebay most of the time but not suitable for the poncy w@nkers who like the shiny little badge & quilting etc..

Asa farmers son and farm worker for 25 years I'd rather be stabbed than wear a wax jacket, but would rather wear one than John Deere overalls. I'd rather have my knob cut off than wear John Deere overalls.

That's the one I have - fantastic jacket. Mine is dark green though?

I think they went green a few years ago - maybe not in production anymore. Mine`s so old it`s the brown type & has a wool tartan lining not a cotton lining. You can get some fleecy sort of waistcoats to press stud into them & a hood to press stud on as well. It is heavy but is 100% windproof, long enough to guard your bum & hail bounces off very well!
Here`s one similar: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BARBOUR-CLASSIC-NORTHUMB...
PS - what`s the point of a waterproof jacket which stops above the waist? Are they for when you`re in your chest waders?

That looks like an s&m outfit.

Does it come with a lead?

They're great if you're out and about in all weathers, but yes they REALLY stink. They're not something you'd want in a car, unless you can have some ventilation. I couldn't live with the smell and gave mine to my dad, who keeps it in his garage.
