Good call, many times over

Mind you, the USS George Washington would also be nice.

It could be anything :

A yacht
A gun
A watch
A ring
A Faberge egg
A car
A chair
A teaspoon

What, for you, is the most desirable object made by man? Ever.

Cost, practicality and functionality are not an issue.

My offering - the Riva Aquarama:

I prefer the car.

What is it?

It's Mr. L's very own Lambo 350 and his Riva fitted with a pair of his cantankerous carbed V12s.

The rod goes down your japs eye. The rod is usually hollow and the ball on the end has a screw on it, you can unscrew it to have a piss

Anyway, this is what I want.

One of the late 80s originals, or a reissue, doesn't matter to me. That is the spec I want, an Ibanez Universe in UV77MC configuration. All of the swirl finishes are unique, but I'd want mine close to this, it has just the right amount of each colour in it. These things are holy grails to some of us. On the whole, I generally find high end bass guitars more aesthetically pleasing, always have done.

Guitars are a funny one. As a watchmaker I've sort of got to the point where achieving a certain finish or whatever is "OK, and?", but like vintage watches I wonder if the appeal of an early Les Paul will one day be replaced by a shred guitar and then replaced with an epiphone 355 with a big ugly union jack on it and what it says about collector mentality in general.

The value of a strat, Kelly, JEM or whatever is surely tied to it's cultural period, wheras the appeal of, say, the Harrsion H-4 chronometer of Concorde is tied to just how super impossible it was to achieve in it's day.

I appraise every instrument I see on it's own merit. The Ibanez Universe in swirl holds personal significance to me because of the man who had it made, but I also find it incredibly alluring to look at, and in terms of spec it's exactly what I'd want in a guitar. On the other hand, I can't think of any artists that hold any particular significance to me who play Telecasters, yet it's a design I love, despite being old fashioned and outdated in many ways. The cultural period of the Telecaster, which is mainly blues, early rock and roll and country music is something I have almost no affection for whatsover, but I still love Teles. When I look at something like a Les Paul I very rarely see any appeal, it's just a design that does nothing for me.

As I say, I prefer high end basses to guitars in terms of aesthetics in general, but I can barely play a bass at all beyond "guitarist playing what he knows on a bass" level, which is really not very good at all.

As a watchmacher, doesn't it make you want to puke when you see a lovely work turn into a Cheshire Posh Spice Bentley?

That would do my noggin in.

Amen. bow

Without wanting to do to much to reveal who I am (like anyone actually cares), on my last week of work at my last job I held a platinum Breguet Tourbillon encrusted with diamonds and disparagingly commented on how garish and tacky it was and wondered aloud who in their right mind would pay for such sacrilege. Like the rise of diesels with nice interiors and Nürburgring laptimes vs actual driving experience, I fear that the majority of people who can actually afford the most desirable man made objects are actually ignorant of why they are desirable in the first place.

But it's probably always been like that. The best wines are probably bought by investors, not by anyone who would dare do something so foolish as actually drink them.

No, not really. When my Boss sold the yacht, he kept some of the nice stuff to take back to the main house.

The trash was left at my flat in Antibes. £100k worth of wine in a little apartment.

Boy, did we have some stonking Sunday Roasts!

Is this a hoakes hoeks hoax? It's certainly an interesting theory that Scarlett Johansson and Sylvia Hoeks are the same person. Has anyone ever seen them in the same room together?

I've always said that if, money no object, I would collect cars, guitars and watches. (and then cufflinks, shoes, bhes etc etc)

A Jem 777 is right up on the list....very desirable....I love an Ibanez.
