It doesn't need disproving - the article is fairly accurate, even if the headline is attention seeking. As Wills says, it's all about the Cairngorms and the rest of the UK will be slightly cooler than normal.

Mr Madden does mention snow for elevated areas of the South as a possibility, so surely that needs to be taken with a pinch of salt?

Sure I watched the report on the news some weeks ago (may even have been the BBC of all people) that they reckon the snow fields on the scottish peaks will remain there all year round, for the first time in many years.

It's always a slight possibility in October. There is near certain snow forecast for parts of Germany etc. There is even colder air further NE. If things came together, cold air drifted our way with some moisture, or met some moist air early one morning, you'd get snow on the South coast. From memory we get October snow on the South coast probably 1 year in 15. Head further north and add elevation and it becomes increasingly common.

I certainly remember low level October snow on the M1 from I think Oct 2009. I picked it up on the front of my car from Leicester to Northampton. I pulled in to Tescos at Brackley to fill up and everyone was staring at my car in disbelief hehe

Map of yesterday's cold in Europe:

Just like the heat of the summer - the sea around us has prevented the extreme effects. -8 in Kiev last

Slimbridge has welcomed the earliest Bewick Swans for over 50 years. Probably more a sign that it's already cold in Russia than impending doom. The signs keep stacking up, but of course none of them are scientifically valid.

Finally put the heating on last night, still picking tomatoes though I suspect we're very close to the end for them

Our heating went on for an hour on Saturday and an hour last night. Just to take the edge off. Don't think we need it on all of the time yet, although we have a separate heater for our little girl's bedroom.
