Christmas film on the TV this afternoon.
Yep, C5 appear to have spent the last 2 afternoons showing Christmas tv shows & related films.

Flicking through the channels earlier and one of the other non descript channels (might have been True Entertainment or similar) was even having a complete day of Christmas movies back to back.

Just to clear this up from a PH point of view. Xmas does not officially begin until Mr Lewis' establishment officially air their festive advert. It's really that simple!

When did parents come under so much pressure to buy the "in" toy?

I don't remember demanding the latest toy back in the 1980s. I know they had ads on the TV for st like that, though.
Eh?

I distinctly remember badgering my parents for a ZX Spectrum. And Action Man before that. Lego. A BMX. TCR. A-Team toys. Star Wars stuff. The list goes on. Didn't get half of it, but didn't stop me asking.

Parents (and I'm one now) are under no more pressure than they were. Probably less in fact in some respects.

I suppose what I should say though with this being PH, is that for Christmas in the 80s I received an orange, a stick and a sound thrashing from Father and I was very grateful as it made me the man I am today with my whispering wealth.

Kids today don't know they're born etc.

Christmas film on the box on saturday.
Ikea already have all their christmas goods out.

Is IKEA full on Christmas or just a few bits? This is a very serious question as I wasn't quick enough last year and my ginger bread supply did not last long enough.

And my boy saw an advert for "anki overdrive" and now he wants it.

To be fair, compared to all the other crap he wants and based on what I have read today it looks pretty good but where do I get it in the UK? I can only find the old "drive" version.

Cheers
That track looks extremely fragile, and will not last that long (or start curving up at the ends or each section bowing slightly to produce an uneven surface).

Raleigh Chopper, BigTrack, Simon game, etc..?
Oh yeah. Never really bothered. I quite fancied a Chopper, got a cheap version that was not as good in every way. Didn't bother me. biggrin

hehe

Sounds like they're under more pressure. Remember the kids' parties of yesteryear?

Calm down. There's no pressure in this house. He sees stuff he likes the look of on TV and occasionally mentions he might put it his Christmas list.

In this particular instance I had clocked the advert before he did. Normally the stuff he sees and likes is googled and turns out to be crap so that is explained and it's never spoken about again.

In this instance it looks pretty cool and like he and his mates would genuinely get a lot of use and pleasure from it. A cross between scalextric and video games which might harbour more of an interest in cars and motorsport in the future.

If I can't track one down that's no problem and he wills understand, but if I can and he enjoys it and gets pleasure from it while I get pleasure from the fact that I found it for him with a small amount of effort what's the problem? You would have to be a proper Scrooge to not want to see a nine year old get a fun and practical toy he wants for Christmas for the sake of a little bit of effort.
Did I sound not calm?

Fair enough, you're taking a more measured approach than many parents, though, by the sound of things.

You don't even control the cars, you can take your hands off completely and they'll just keep going round and round. £150!

You can buy on Amazon.com and have it shipped to the UK. Total cost £146 inc duty.

Yeah, the "C word" gets thrown around with gay abandon in my house the moment they go back to School after the summer break.

There's usually a "OMG Xmas Stuff in Shop Windows!!!1!" thread on here about this time of year, the first few posts moan about it being earlier every year until someone links back to the same thread for last year and the year before about the same time.

As I understand it, retailers bash out the Xmas stuff the moment the Back to School stuff is off the shelves, there's a brief rest-bite for Halloween (now we've followed our American cousins into making it a huge event needing much planning and expense) before it's thrown into overdrive on the 1st of November.

There's no 'in present' to worry about securing in our house, my Daughter is 18 months and her favourite thing in the whole world (apart from Daddy of course) is a small rubber 'football' about the size of a golf ball, I might buy her a dozen - not sure Mum will agree. My Son is 10, he wants an iPod touch, but we bought him a Samsung Tablet thing a few years ago, at first it was pretty benign, I loaded his DVDs onto it for long car journeys and he played app games and didn't have access to the internet - then Minecraft and Stamp-pissing-loudnoise came about, hours and days lost to watching Minecraft videos on YouTube, which lead to more Teen Vloggers which turned an 8 year old boy into a 14 year old sassy teenage girl who talked back rudely and generally acted the arse - it ended up in the bin under much protest of innocent but what's the point of making a threat without following it up.

He's getting a bike, a very expensive, very yellow bike, I'm sure he'll like it, but their will be a tinge of sadness because all his friends have got the iPod and video chat each-other, but I can't face another bout of attitude from bloody youtube, although at least this time if he does get it taken off him, I'd quite like it.

Netflix put up "Jingle all the way" about two weeks ago.

I remember watching it in January this year, it's really depressing watching a Christmas film after Christmas has gone hehe
I like Christmas but only for the family and friends side of it (seriously), nothing like relaxing for a few days eating, drinking and having fun.

Its the time of year when I lay out loads of money on ste that people dont really want.

Our house is overburdened with stuff, I dont really want any more, Christmas would be awesome if someone came in and took all the ste she hangs onto that I want out of the house.

Buying stuff for everyones kids who have more toys than they could ever play with, trying to come up with suitable gift ideas for kids that go to a 15 grand a year school that have ponies and will be away skiing anyway, i am sure that bit of plastic tat will make their lives complete.

My missus buys me novelty stuff, "box of trivia cards", "Desktop chair stacking game", Nanoblock Christmas tree FFS, I tell her every year I will not burst into tears if I dont have thirty pieces of random st to open, then there is the chocolate, "Reeses Pieces Dibeattus selection", tend stolid lumps of peanutty lard covered in chocolate, just what I need, I dont want any of it and throwing it away is frowned upon. Whats wrong with some ironmongery or a new soldering iron, why all this st that is just landfill as soon as its made ?

She details every item she wants on Amazon, if I stray from that list I am in trouble, so have done it myself this year, I have to not buy stuff that I need now so I have to wait until Christmas, needed a new cordless screwdriver, but not, I will be getting one in december, tell my poor palm that after hand screwing 30 or so three inch woodscrews when repairing the shed.

I could cheerfully ignore the whole thing, make a donation to charity and volunteer somewhere, the where to have it thing will be different as her dad passed away in July and normally he was threatening suicide if nobody agreed to come for Christmas by November the 5th.
