New Zealand, that was probably a few grand in total. Most of us who went fancied a trip over there anyway though and I had a great 3 week roadtrip with a couple of mates on the way to it.
My own wedding was in NZ, we just had a big party/reception in London a few weeks later though.
If they're not offering to pick up the tab, they don't really expect you to be there.
A wedding invite was the catalyst for our NZ holiday. Admittedly couldn't do / afford it now with the kids.My own wedding was in NZ, we just had a big party/reception in London a few weeks later though.

Four weeks campervaning round both the North and South islands, the wedding, a massive argument with my then girl friend on the last night followed by me proposing to her, she said yes, nearly six years of marriage now and two kids, so actually thinking about it that wedding will probably cost me £500k or more The holiday actually cost around £4-5k for the two of us and was probably the best holiday I've ever had
Next most expensive was probably my cousins in Ireland but again we had a weeks holiday out of it.

Mate of mine is getting married in Thailand so the cost for me to see my mate get married is £1800.
The stag do is in Portugal so that's another £700
I'm assuming part of the family is from Thailand? If not, that's a big ask to expect people to schlep all that way.The stag do is in Portugal so that's another £700
The other thing that's passed me by; When did a Stag night turn into a Stag weekend, turn into a Stag week, turn into a Stag week abroad?
Personally, I'd have said no to both, but then I'm miserable like that.

That's £2500 because someone decided to get married.
What's the most you have spent on a non family members marriage.
Ironically, it is possible that one of the drivers for your mate is keeping costs down for whoever is paying for the wedding. If its at home, everybody must be invited and will attend. Make it abroad and half of the guests won't come, so a smaller venue, fewer meals, lighter champagne tab etc... The stag do is in Portugal so that's another £700

2k On a wedding trip to the Sorrento.
Despite everyone I have ever met raving about Sorrento, I thought it was a filthy, shabby, mob ridden, expensive hell hole.
We were supposed to be there for a week, but seeing as myself and the mrs couldn't see anything worth staying for we left the morning after the wedding.

I was best man at a mates wedding the Caribbean... cost £5k as I had to take the wife too!
It seems I'm rare in that I got married in this country!
Out of curiosity - did your mate consult you about getting married in the Caribbean before it was all booked or would you just have been replaced by the second best man if you'd said you couldn't afford it?It seems I'm rare in that I got married in this country!
Strikes me as a monumental conceit to drag your guests halfway across the planet at their expense. When I got hitched we chose the venue so that it would be as easy as possible for the guests to get to. The whole point of a wedding is to get a group of people together to witness the marriage and spend some time in each others company. Including getting pissed and staggering around on the dance floor. If someone wants to go meet Willy Wonka in a plastic theme park, fine, but save it for the honeymoon or whenever. At all costs spare your poor bleeding guests.
I'm more than happy to fork out for airline tickets and hotels to go to a wedding if it's on the bride and groom's home turf. The money just doesn't come in to it. Come to think of it, I've attended weddings in Argentina, South Africa and Delaware. More recently and rather closer to home I've been to weddings in Croatia and outside Berlin. Brings back fond memories of some bloke sitting on the roof of our car as we drove to the Croatian church.

To be honest we were always heading there on holiday, we just moved the dates back a few weeks to be there for the big day. We only spent a couple of days in the wedding town, the rest was just the 2 of us.
I guess about £500-700 for a stag week in Portugal is about the most it's cost me, but between my wife and I, we have a lot of weddings and stag/hen dos. I think this year we are on 6 weddings with one more to go and the last couple of years have been about 8 a year. When you add in the cost of stag/hen dos (which rarely seem to be just a drinking session anymore) and travelling to weddings (a lot of my wife's friends are in London, we're in Cornwall, so hotel and fuel costs) it gets quite expensive.
i'd say roughly £3k all in - flights, hotels, car hire, food and booze plus a new suit and shoes.stag do was in stockholm, wedding in the uk. problem being i live in the middle east.
totally worth it though. i missed 4 mates weddings last year due to working away and the groom is one of my oldest friends. him and his mrs are wonderful people and it was a good chance to catch up with a group of very good mates who i haven't seen in a while. i also took the opportunity to see my folks and even enjoy the uk in a rare moment of sunny weather.
for the OP's situation, if they want to get wed in thailand they really shouldn't expect more than close family to attend, then have a reception on their return to the uk.

In a similar situation, just had the stag which was in London (stag lives in New York flew over), off to Atlanta for the wedding this weekend, then Florida for a few days after. The stag do is in Portugal so that's another £700

Stag ~£500+ at a guess
Flights £500
Hotels £400
Spending Money and Present £500+
One of my best friends, so wouldn't miss it for the world, but it does hurt a bit to have to drop that amount of cash, and not have a lot of choice in the matter. After all said and done will be over £2k I'd have thought.
Its pretty much meant not going on holiday anywhere else this winter, and having to make a couple of other sacrifices.

About £750 for a long weekend in Las Vegas for my mates stag weekend. Pretty reasonable cost for what we got out of it. The wedding was in Cornwall thankfully - much cheaper.
I got married in Tokyo so I can't really talk as it's not the cheapest city - 3 of my best mates came over for it and made it into a holiday.

Good God man, have you NO idea..!?The whole point of a wedding is to impress as many friends and family as possible with the biggest flashiest bash you can possibly put on your credit cards in a the vain hope that they'll be impressed with your massive wealth and success (even though 95% of them know you live in a rented one bedroom flat above a Chinese takeaway).
It's the very rock that a marriage should be built on - a huge sham and massive amounts of debt.
How can you expect any relationship to last without it?
5 weeks in Oz to be my mates bestman...
well OK. he did ask me if i was still coming to the wedding after looking at flight costs etc etc. then he asked if I would be his bestman... which is how I think I would have done it also, so not to apply undue pressure to come along even if I couldnt realy have afforded it.
well.. ok we made the holiday 5 weeks, Perth, Melb', Eng-Auz ODI, great ocean road, kangaroo island after that the wedding stuff only took a week.
st load of money.. but worth it.

Latest wedding was approximately £500 plus 4 days annual leave. Wedding on a Tuesday (cheaper for them) with 2 days leave plus 2 days leave for stag do. Enjoyed myself but not as much as a long weekend in NYC. Plus the "thank you" card they sent was st!
Oh and we all paid for the grooms stag weekend
