How do people end up with thse odds'n'sods from inheritance?
Does the will specifically state "I would like to pass down my enammel badger-themed drinks coaster to my nephew, Simon"?
Does one person gain ownership of the entire contents of the house and they invite family members in to take what they want?
It makes me wonder who might end up with my vintage 80's Kelloggs cereal bowl.

If nothing is in place the executor of the will allows the family to pick and choose, everything else goes to the dump.Does the will specifically state "I would like to pass down my enammel badger-themed drinks coaster to my nephew, Simon"?

Thats how I ended up with:
several old cameras
several old calculators
a bronze style cutlery set from grandparents 50th wedding anniversary
Never did find out what happened to the medals my grandfather got as I would have like them too.
I felt embarrassed to be picking through my Grandad's stuff.
He had lot of old tools and I just didn't want to be greedy and take the lot so just had a few bits n bobs.
My oldest sister got his car,a 1973 Triumph 1500,car wasn't very old when he passed.
She was the only grandchild old enough to drive then.

Not bragging but just about to come into a good sum, just over 6 figures. If we noved to a smaller house now we'd be mortgage free for life (mid 30's) but as it is we'll use it to pay off some existing mortgage, saving us £450 a month, so very nice, but not as life changing as it might sound. Tempted to get an r8 though!

Some serious advice for you...It is VERY tempting to go on a stupid spending spree when you inherit a serious amount of money, (quite understandable).....but remember you are only young and you may need that money for a rainy day.
It is surprising how quick you can burn through it...Lottery Lout Michael Carroll went through £8m in four years.....now he's a dustman.
I'm not saying don't buy something nice but think hard before you splash the cash.
Certainly pay off your mortgage though.

Thanks! To clarify its just over £100k not 7 figures, it will repay 13k of an existing car loan as wife has just given up work as we've had a baby and her wage isn't high enough to be worth working and oaying childcare, and the rest will go straight onto mortgage and that is it, you only get one chance with this sort if windfall. If it was a mil i woukd buy an r8 for sure tho but £45k budget for an old one plus a crbon deoosit build up clean.
Never understood why oeople buy new cars. My 997 was £95k new and i paid a third of that. It's cost me a few quid in repairs but still less than the original owner lost who traded it for £29k!!!!

Dad died in December last year; Christmas eve, everything has gone to the stepmum, I assume then when she dies that the house will be split between myself and my sister and probably her son.
She has recently asked both myself and my sister to compile a list of things of my dads that we would like from the house, I already have the family china and there is a family ring that I am waiting for.
Nan died a couple of years ago, as well as a small amount of money, she left me a unit that my great grand father made; it has pride of place in the lounge and houses the family china.
Big assumption there fella! Unless you were mentioned in your Dad's will then there is every chance that you may not inherit anything from that particular pot. My step mother also said that my sister and I would get the house as well as asking is to compile a list of what we would like from the house. There has been no contact from her for, perhaps, four years and I suspect that any wishes my father may have had will be ignored and she will line her own family's pockets with his hard earned. After my mum died, my dad was in bits so me and my sisters took care of all of the practicalities.
I had expected the usual tasks like going to registry office and the funeral director, what I hadn't expected was the trip down to the local police HQ to hand in a lot or badly corroded live ammunition.
While looking for various bits of paper I had come across some papers about my grandfather's estate (he died in 1985) and then a small cardboard box that had various old bits of paper including his ration card, home guard ID and a small hessian bag containing a load of badly corroded .303 and .22 cartridges.
