A colleague is about to retire after 25 years 'service'.
We're only a small company but feel it's appropriate to present him with a small gift as a thank you. He has a decent watch so we think the obvious choice is unsuitable.
Despite the long service, we don't know him that well as he's in a remote branch and hass rarely made it to social occasions. Two things we do know; he's a keen rugby fan and he's planning a tour of Britain with his wife when he retires.

The budget is limited to about £1,250 - any ideas please?

Tickets to the final surely?

..Unless of course he's an england fan, in which case that might just be salt in the wounds.

If he likes travelling round Britain how about 2 annual memberships of the National Trust for him and his wife.

If he is a rugby fan perhaps 2 season tickets for his local/favorite team, or perhaps a weekend away with 2 tickets for a 6 Nations match.

Your budget is excellent but as he has the nice timepiece already you may struggle to spend it all (6 Nations idea excluded) unless he would like some crystal (decanter, stand and glasses perhaps), a painting, some travel vouchers of some sort.

Going by what you've posted you may well already know this, but note that:

  1. Gifts of up to £50 per complete year of service are considered tax exempt - any excess is taxable (and subject to Class 1A NICs).
  2. Cash is always taxable, but vouchers are OK.
  3. To be eligible for exemption, the employee has to have completed at least 20 years' service (which is fine in this case) and has not received a long service award in the last 10 years.

English Heritage / National Trust and £1000 bonus to spend on what he wants on his trip?

(our company give out preloaded debit cards that can only be spent at some retailers - BonusBond. Not brilliant but better than getting something I don't want!)

Buy him a credit note for products and/or services your company provides.

That way, you don't actually spend anything.

After 10 years' service at my previous employer, I got an extra day off (for that year only) and a paperweight engraved with the company logo...

It's alright, I was confused as well.

I thought you asked if there was such a thing, and then went on to suggest getting such a thing, that made my two braincells collide and the result wasn't pretty.

I'll get back in my box now. thumbup

A lot of rugby clubs do a 'Club' of some sort (ie. season ticket, seat in a box plus a bit of hospitality), if you know what team he supports you could get in touch with them and see what they can do for the budget.

Mate of mine has a 'Champions Club' membership at Northampton Saints, seems to like it - http://saints.fusecollaboration.com/matchday/hospi...
