Some of the support for Ireland may be due to the "anyone but the English" attitude of the Scots and the Welsh. I liked the honesty of the English fan who had a T-short with "Our chariot's f%^ked so I'm hitching a ride on the Paddywagon".
I don't object to the "anyone but England" mentality in sport. Part envy, part idiosyncrasy but generally amusing (much like us banging on about the Germans, despite them hating the Dutch, French, Polish, Austrians before us).

In the case I mentioned though, it was an English person...only it went from arsebook profile photos of the English Rose, statuses about sweet chariots etc to a clover and "guiness for breakfast, c'mon Ireland" within about half hour.

Genuinely cringeworthy!

Feigned ignorance regarding sports people, celebrities, television, events or new technology in an attempt to look above it.
Not believing that someone has no interest in ball games, reality TV shows or the celebrity culture really grates and says more about the disbeliever's clichéd life than it does about those looking on in bemusement.

I am aware of some household names such as Beckham or suchlike but that's about it. Apparently there was a rugby tournament on recently, however I have no idea who was playing and wouldn't put money on being able to state the name of the winning team. There's nothing wrong with this so don't for a moment think I'm feigning ignorance just to appear different.

Totally honest with this one, I have heard many a famous persons name, but when they walk into the recording studio next to my desk, I wouldn't know most of them from Adam. Took me 2 months to work out Mystic Meg was recording her weekly segment next to me! Some boyband stunk of BO and I learned today that that might be their "thing"! Dirty fking skets. RadMac are cool though smile

Quite agree Impasse. I have no interest in most sports, modern (so-called) music, people who are famous just for being famous, and the vast majority of TV rubbish, for example I have never seen a single minute of "Britain's Got The Idol Factor" or whatever the current incarnation is called. Therefore I have no need to feign anything and resent any implication that I would.

If you want to get reallllllly technical, trains can pull things. smile
Well correct me if I'm wrong (which you will). I always understood that the thing what goes Chuff-chuff or Brrrrm
is the locomotive while the whole thing including carriages or wagons is the train.

If not, how else could there be Diesel or steam locomotives?

It's not a case of having an interest in things that don't interest you, it's the smug insistence that you've never read a newspaper or a magazine (nor even glimpsed a cover in a newsagents), happened to see the side of a bus or advertising billboard, watched the news or generally any TV and then glibly state that you've never even HEARD of Wayne Rooney/Adele/the new James Bond Film.

I've heard of them, but never paid attention.

Wayne Rooney - footballer? Round or oval ball - I dunno
Adele - pop singer i guess?
There's a new James Bond film, but I don't know the title ; is Daniel Craig still 007, or someone new?

I'm not making it up, just uninterested in a lot of pop culture.

Nope, I've heard of Wayne Rooney. But I have no idea which football club he plays for. I've heard of the singer Adele. Could I name one of her songs? No. I don't read newspapers, no nor do I pay attention to buses except for sometime erratic behaviour of their drivers.

And yes, apparently there was a rugby tournament on recently. No idea who played whom or where it was held. I'm aware rugby is a club sport, a Commonwealth sport and world sport. But that doesn't mean I know which one was being played recently. Why would I?

The point George and Issi are making is that some people deny they ever heard the word rugby.

Never ever missing the chance to mimic a comedy character from TV.
Eg Dad's Army: You stupid boy; We,re all doomed; etc
Allo Allo: Good Moaning.
Irrespective of the social circumstances, blokes trot out these lines.
Just don't mention the war....

A very deep hole would have to be penetrated not to have, even in passing, heard about 'stuff'. In these times of instant news and information it's all around. You don't have to know in detail about any person or event, but for it to pass you unseen or unheard, I don't buy it.

No wonder you spend so much time on the PH forum, it must be the only website you can download using your dial up connection for a place so remote that you have no idea what is going on in the world. FYI the Rugby World Cup was held in England and Wales.
