That laser cutting is very impressive, but why does it start at a point on the inside of the shape it cuts out?
When the hole starts you can get a nasty burr behind and it can blow out sideways slightly so they start the cut away from the final shape to ensure a good finish.
Much obliged.

I'm guessing its easier to index the centre of the location you want to cut a shape in, rather than having to calculate a random point on the outline?

To make sure the cut is uniform along the sweep profile. Starting on the waste piece means it doesn't matter if the cut isn't uniform at the point the laser is switched on.

Likewise. If this stuff is of interest, try Simon Singh's excellent Science of Secrecy series he did for Channel 4 (also a good book) back in the '90's that looked at the history of cryptology. This link here takes you to his episode on public key encryption, including interviews with the americans referenced in the other video (part 1) and an interview with an English chap who solved it in half an hour for GCHQ but obviously never got any credit (part 2 and this includes the maths in a slightly more accessible form).

Unlucky train driver and 3 dead passengers.

'Instead of ramming through the gate, which is constructed so as to allow even a motorbike to penetrate the barrier and automatically sends a stop signal to all approaching trains if breached, the driver moved the truck only a few metres forward in order to avoid a direct impact to its cab.'

Normally it's to put tool correction G40/G41/G42 on, effectively compensating for the radius of the laser beam. Also as said, less likely to leave a witness mark on the profile edge.
