1. That's what often happens when you top a tree. That's why you rope up and dig in.
An experienced tree surgeon, and this was nothing more than 'surgery', would be unlikely to cut more than a metre at a time.

2. Falling a tree uphill? + Standing next to a tree while someone else is cutting? A 'what you deserve moment'. One of them was going to get hit.

3. st happens. But it would have been obvious to the faller that the guts were rotten. He should have been 100% prepared for that, or something much like it.

4. Idiot hits power line. Nothing to say. Idiot.

5. That high up, from a ladder, not tied on. Branch tip will hit the ground before the cut end clears the cutter. What could possibly go wrong?

6. I hope the money they get for that tree helps pay for the damage (but I don't think so). The wood value or laziness are the only reasons you would cut the full tree in a case like that.

7. As per 5. If the section you are cutting is long enough for the top to hit the ground before the cut end clears the cutter, something like that is inevitable. The question is; "do you survive it?"

8. Man power vs tree. One rope. No concept of vectors. Someone fell asleep during all of their physics classes.
Had they cut that in sections, they wouldn't be on YouTube.

4 minute video of a guy who wants to live through the tree topping experience.
https://youtu.be/2nVOUyZYxnE
- zero wind conditions
- positioned to the side of the cut
- chasing a wedge into the cut so he knows which way the top is going
- no drama, just big kahones

Nicely done!

I expect that rope used for tying himself to the tree, was not as unsafe as the fraying suggests?

For sure. The rope would have a core as you say.

You had need of a spar tree? smile
Local job?

No not a spar. Was a huge Scots Pine, part of a big job at Burnham Beeches, I left it as a70' pole for someone else to fell,be gulped when I showed him as it had to be threaded between 2 other trees.

That was a very big pine tree.
Just seems a bigger risk than usual for what appears to be a 'non-surgical' removal.
Good job nonetheless.
